Victorian licence plate numbering

Does anybody know how VicRoads issue the numbers? It appears they miss many numbers. That is;

AAA 000 to AZZ 999 = 676,000 numbers.

My car's numberplate in 1999 started with a P
My car's numberplate in 2003 started with a S
My car's numberplate in 2007 started with a U
My car's numberplate in 2010 started with a X

If all numbers are used, that implies in 11 years 6,084,000 new registrations were issued. That can't be right as there weren't 6 million new cars sold in Victoria in that period.

What about second hand cars bought from interstate?

Or cars where the driver has had personalised plates and retains them

Or the cars where plates are stolen and new ones are issued, or the old shitters that are re-reg'd, or the ones where the plates are old and **** and need to be replaced, or the plates that they can't issue
(anything with *** JET *** TIT DIK SEX etc) or the plates that people have kept/bought and not used etc etc etc.

In 1977, reflective green-on-white plates were introduced, beginning at AAA-000 and running to FZZ-999. These bore the insert Victoria - Garden state at the bottom of the plate. In the early nineties, it was discovered that the reflective properties of many number plates in the range from AAA to EZZ, and principally the C series, were defective and this had coincided with the rapid introduction of speed cameras in Victoria. Due to the number of plates which were unidentifiable in photographs, all defective plates were recalled and new plates issued free of charge. This caused the rapid consumption of the plate stocks especially in the late F series and some plates (those starting with FTA to FYZ) were produced in Queensland to meet demand. These plates are identifiable by their different font and vertical diamond separator (as opposed to Victoria's horizontal diamond). An additional series RAA-000 until RBZ-999 was produced. It is a popular myth that the defective paint was caused by prisoners manufacturing the plates urinating in the paint mixture. In 1984(?) for the 150th anniversary of European settlement in Victoria, plates bore the slogan Victoria - 150 Years down the bottom. In 1988 for the Australian Bicentennial, the plates bore the "VIC" insert horizontally down the left-hand side and also the slogan Australia - 1788 to 1988 across the bottom.

In late 1994, in an initiative by the then-Premier, Jeff Kennett, reflective blue-on-white plates were introduced, beginning at NAA-000. The diamond-dot in the middle was changed to the state logo of a blue St Edward's Crown over an upside-down blue triangle with the Victorian Southern Cross in white inside. These plates bore the slogan Victoria - On the move across the bottom. The "on the move" notation was the source of many jokes in Queensland, being stated as "Victoria - on the move, to Queensland" - owing to the massive "seachange" internal migration that has occurred in the last 20–30 years, with many Victorians moving to Queensland for a life change. In late 1999 when the new Labor Party won government, they phased out the old state logo and motto to prepare for the introduction of a new one. Until these were finalised, plates (in the QDa-nnn series at the time) reverted to the old diamond-dot with simply Victoria across the bottom. In late 2000, the dot became the new logo simply of an enlarged blue triangle with the Victorian Southern Cross in it, the top lining up with the top of the plate, and bearing the slogan Victoria - The place to be across the bottom. As of 8 December 2010, The new Baillieu Government has announced it is dropping "The Place To Be" slogan from Victorian number plates. A replacement slogan would become available in late 2011.

In addition to everyone else's reply re the other uses for new registration plates (we register cars, not license them, drivers get licenses) - number sequences are removed for all sorts of reasons - ie. XAA***were reserved for the commonwealth games cars in 2006.

Also you need to take all of V** *** out of the equation as well, as these are all reserved as custom euro style plates.

don't forget that a % of Z series plates are for commonwealth cars & feature a red Z with the remaining letters & numbers in blue, anyway, soon vicroads will release a new combo as we have gone through the current series...

Instead of creating different types of combinations, why don't they just start again at AAA-000 and re-use all the combinations which are no longer in use?

M series are reserved for state government departments.

A mate of mine who works at the TAC (actully he doesn't work, he just gets paid by them) reckons we'll be getting a digit in the front like WA. They looked at doing it the reverse way, but worked out that it woulb be confusing, so they took the expensive option and now all the systems need to be updated to accomodate the extra digit and the TAC is paying. As always.

How would doing it the reverse way be confusing? QLD plates are 000-XXX (I had 239 KJJ as a standard issue plate back in 07, 238 RFI when I got the car re registered in October '10) QLD have been the reverse of every other state since the early 1970's

+1. That'll never happen, makes too much sense.

I hope they stick to 6 characters. Those 7 character WA plates look poxy.

I'd like to see the numbers and letters reversed as per QLD (222-AAA) or having the last number replaced by a letter (AAA-22A). I hate the NSW system of AA-22-AA, hope we don't get that!!

If I don't like what comes in I'll just carry my current plates through every future car I have, or maybe order the plates of my first car for the sake of nostalgia.

SA went to 7 characters over 2 years ago now. all new plates since then have started with a S and then the 3 numerals and 3 letters. my last plate was S150 AAC. the old 6 character plates have 3 letters and 3 numerals.

they could make it a national system with the letter representing the state. ie - s = sa, v = vic, n = nsw etc etc.

WA can have up to 9 characters including spaces and any letter/number/space combo you like, some very creative plates out there

Victorians buy roughly 250,000 new cars a year, so over a 11 year period it has has probably come to roughly 3 million cars. Then as has been said before, all the stolen, replaced ones etc. Then I am pretty sure they would selectively remove certain ones like SEX 699 (not for the purchaser, but i would feel a bit sickly if i saw a grandma driving around with these plates). Plus you got to remember that they are issued by a government department (ie you lose 10% of the plates without coming up with a rational basis why).

Actually rumour is that holden buy up roughly 1000 phantom plates a month from the vic government and call them Commodore sales. Lol
