TDCi Replacement spare tyre/wheel

I am looking to replace the space saver with a full sized tyre wheel which will fit in the spare well without using spacers. I have the TDCi with 235/45 R17 tyres. Does anyone know if there is a tyre/wheel combination which will fit (ie is there a narrower width tyre with a similar circumference to the current tyre). The 215/55 R16 for example is narrower and has close enough to the same rolling radius and circumference as the TDCi combo, so does this fit in the spare well without using spacers?
My aim is to have a tyre capable of more than 100km range plus greater safety than the spacesaver.

Best bet is to visit a friendly tyre specialist, they deal with this sort of thing all the time. finding a tyre will be easy, problem might be getting a steel rim to suit the mondeo stud pattern.

Check with a Ford Dealer, wonder how many LX's have been supplied with aftermarket wheels... ? they might off load you a steelie...

My dealer threw in a free full-size spare with a steel rim as a sweetener. The trade off was the loss of some boot space as the tyre sits higher than the space-saver, but considering the huge boot the Mondeo has I don't see it as a problem.

I still have not found a full sized spare and found the dealer no help. At this stage it not so urgent for me to get a full size spare but would love to know what size spare wheel was thrown in for MondeoManiac. Also, how much higher does it sit? Could get some high density foam/rubber to raise the floor and keep it flat.

The NZ Mondeos come with a full size spare. There is a foam insert that sit around the wheel and raises the floor to the height of the wheel. What your chances are of finding this insert in Oz I can imagine... But you could probably make something quite easily. Let me know if you'd like a photo.

Mine is a 215/55 R16, sits about 2 inches higher than the normal space saver. A photo of the foam insert would be great NZ_XR6, I was thinking of making something similar to raise the floor level but need a bit of guidance! Cheers in advance.

OK, but it'll be a couple of days before I can do it as I'm on the road with a boot full of tools etc.

I'd actually thought of getting a space saver and removing the foam to get more boot space! But I do most of my driving in the country and would hate to have to drive any distance on a space saver.

Sorry guys, completely forgot about this. The insert is quite deep and reduces the boot depth noticeably, although the compartments could be used to hide small items. Unfortunately my laptop won't fit any of them. But don't ask me to give up my full size spare!



I'm really not sure how you'd fold this up. But it looks as though it's in 2 pieces and would probably survive a trip across the Tasman quite happily.

And I forgot to mention that the round plastic thingy on top of the spare is a spacer, so there should be room for even the 18" wheel to fit in the well.
