I know this question is asked all the time and I have searched the threads but can't find a definitive answer.
Time has come once again to put new tyres on the LTD. Being conservative up until now I have stuck with what was on from original fitment i.e. 225/60/16 Dunlop Sports D8z. Every tyre joint I go to recommends something different, namely Pirelli, Yokohama, Bridgestone or Michelin All I want is a quiet tyre with plenty of grip. I have ruled out the el-cheapo tyres and I think the Dunlops are about $245 each. They tell me they are hard to get and are a funny size!!! I know tyre choice is subjective but I don't want to change and find that I have bought noisy tyres. |

Either Yokohama A-drives or C-drives ... not cheap ... but boy do they grip and are quiet to boot. Deep tread as well ... expecially the C-drives.

What do you guys recommend for 235/45/r17's? I've got SP3000's on right now but three are almost done.

MAXXIS MA-Z1s ... value for money this tyre has been excellent. I will definitely be getting these again.
35,000km so far on my set ... one rotation ... and the fronts has front shoulder wear due to stuffed wheel bearings and a ball joint stuffed as well. Since then the wear has been great. I have a long way to go to the tread markers ... the tread is still very deep ... tyres are quiet ... wet and dry grip is excellent ... aquaplaning is non-existent during torrential rain on rough country roads. Going by current wear ... I am hoping to reach 70,000km ... if not 65,000km from them ... pretty good consiering the grip levels they have.

When I last got them ... $169 a tyre. From Tyres & More in Richmond.
Another good thing to mention about them ... the sidewall is thick and strong ... and sits out further than my rims. Had a close call with a narrow driveway underground in a carpark ... and i needed to get passed a concrete kerb and had to skim the tyre past it ... didn't touch the rim only scuffed the tyre gently. (if it was the Nankangs I would have gutter rashed the rims :( ) I was looking at the Hankook K104s at the time (apparently on par with the Maxxis) but they were $225 a tyre. There are cheaper tyres out there ... i had Nankang NSII Ultrasports for $119 a tyre ... but I wasn't happy with them ... they were loud, had issues balancing them, lacked any sort of grip, narrow/rounded shoulders. But I paid for what I got ... in essence a cheap tyre.
