Default Sync3 + music - best option?

About to take delivery of a new Ford Escape and wondering what the best way to have on board music is. My FG and now territory had an ipod plug but obviously this has given way to usb plugs and Bluetooth.

The options we're looking at is buying a used ipod with Bluetooth (nano 7th gen onwards I believe) or just using a flash drive or similar. Looking for something that can be left in the car, rather than use phones. We're both a bit old school and don't have music on phones or use streaming services.

I like the fact that with an ipod the music can be searched via various different headings. By title, by artist, by genre, play lists etc.
If music is loaded on to a flash drive, can it be searched in the same way? Does sync do any indexing /sorting of its own or is it all to do with the device the music is stored on?

What's the best way to get music in the car?

Thanks in advance.
