maybe a leg problem necessitated the auto, or he had an xw gt auto sitting in his driveway and thought "let's go racing"
There is a feature article on the auto XW GT in AMC mag issue 66. Charlie Smith a production car racer of the time, wanted a car that could haul the family to the track go racing and then drive home. How times have changed, car came 2nd in classE behind Kev Bartletts Alfa. He went on to do hillclimbs in it sharing with his son. The car is now restored and painted in its Bathurst livery #68E.
