American Go Fast Parts for VF Commodore

An American desire for go-fast parts could translate to extra goodies for the soon-to-arrive new VF Commodore.




Holden’s upcoming VF Commodore could benefit from an accessories program being developed for the car when it is sold in the United States as a Chevrolet SS late in 2013.

Speaking at the 2013 New York motor show reveal of the SS, General Motors engineering chief David Leone confirmed a range of accessories was being considered for the car, which will go on sale in November or December 2013.

“Potentially,” was his answer when asked whether the race-inspired carbon ceramic brakes used in the high performance Chevrolet Camaro Z28 could be fitted to the Chevy SS.

“The rotors would fit, yes ... [but] it’s not just a direct install and drive away.”

But Leone said such brakes – which would require calibration of electronic systems such as ABS and stability control – would likely not be fitted as standard fare on a future variant Chevrolet SS.

“You might be able to get those more readily as an accessory rather than a standard option.”

As for Australia, Leone pointed to Holden’s high performance partner, HSV.

“HSV could do that – if we were going to do something like that it’d probably be even more appropriate to do with HSV,” he said.

Leone said the Chevrolet SS was the sort of car that opens itself to a number of accessories, many of which could be performance focused.

The 20-inch wheels that will be offered on the cars in Australia would be an obvious candidate for the accessories list (the SS will be sold in the US with 19-inch wheels as standard).

“The thoughts are endless,” said Leone. “You could do air boxes that get you a few more ponies ... those kind of things we look at often. We’ve looked at those kind of applications.”

He said any accessories would be developed in Australia, increasing the likelihood that such options or accessories could one day be offered on the new VF Commodore, which goes on sale in June 2013.

“We’re leveraging our Australian workforce to do this car,” said Leone. “Ninety eight per cent of it was done in Melbourne ... they [any accessories] would be.”

As for the ultimate in performance, a supercharged V8 that’s rumoured to be on the cards for the yet-to-be-revealed HSV version of the VF Commodore, Leone said it was not being considered.

“We don’t have any plans for a supercharger V8 in this one now,” he said,

“The mission for this car is to try to elevate the Chevy brand from a performance and luxury standpoint simultaneously and that’s where this thing is placed.

“I don’t know if it’s necessary. It’s more expensive. If I can’t get that money then it’s not a good investment for us. These are relatively low volume cars.”

But he left the door slightly ajar, saying a supercharged V8 could happen “potentially”.
