Default Why do people buy XTs and then add fairmont/XR bits?

Why is it that people go out and buy the base model of cars such as a ba falcon xt but over time try and transform them into a fairmont/ghia, xr or even fpv models?

For instance i see too many xt's/futuras getting around with fairmont chrome garnish or grill, xr rear bumpers (even fronts), fairmont icc units with premium sound/climate control, moulds suddenly colour coded, wheels from another model (almost acceptable). Sometimes even seats.

On my street there is a ba xt with full fpv kit and wing, stripes, duel side oval exhausts and its a i6 with taxi pack interior? Some silly chrome wheels and they think its a hot car?

If you want the more upmarket or sporty model, why not just buy it in the first place? The cost and time of mucking around would suggest its the better option.

Also if i was to buy a used car and in the market for a base model, i would buy a stock car over the many spare parts bin specials out there.
