Exclamation The Darwin Award 2007

FATE has intervened in spectacular fashion to help police arrest two alleged drug offenders.

It was Fear and Loathing St George style when two men booked into the town's Merino Motor Inn on Tuesday, unaware of the remarkable coincidence about to befall them.
Little did they know that senior police from the region, in the state's southwest, were meeting at the venue that day.

In a scene reminiscent of the 1971 Hunter S. Thompson book, one officer who had arrived early in the town noticed a strange odour coming from one of the motel rooms.

Motor inn owner Michael Newell said he could smell something strange too but had no idea what it was.

'Obviously, the police knew exactly what was going on," Mr Newell said.

He said a search warrant was organised, the police were given a room key and they swooped.

"Can you imagine the shock these blokes got? They were taken outside and there's 19 police officers and more than a dozen patrol cars in the car park," Mr Newell said.

Amphetamines and drug related items were allegedly found in the raid.

Two men from Beachmere, 53km north of Brisbane, were charged by police with several drug and property offences.

They are due to appear in the St George Magistrate's Court on April 11.
