Ford Escort with an SR20-DET for an engine swap, or a tuned Galant VR4 AWD turbo (looks like a baby Magna) for a stock car.

Wouldn't know about a turbo XE, but get a N15 SSS with the GTI-R engine in it and have fun. Just make sure you have good tyres on the front and even then it's hard to launch but you would get used to it.
merlin, I'd hardly call a VR4 a sleeper. They stick out like EVOs to the educated person. : |

The Cortina would be the cheapest and most legal as it is factory. You just have to find a good one.

N14 Pulsar TI. Same engine as the SSS but no bodykit.
Put in a DET and your sweet. Also a fan of 20valve AE82/92 Rollas. |

The technology offered in the Nissan and moreso the Toyota 4cyls were 5-10 years infront of a lot of the rest of the 4cyl market.

One of my old mates off boostcruising is currently selling an mx83 cressida with a 1jz motor in it.
Has a couple of electrical issues with it but once sorted will make 500hp easy. Only wants $8-9k for it too...

TF cortina with a BA engine, they go well enough with a 250, if you wanted something really insane you could go the turbo. Probably wouldnt be that hard to engineer either

nah a crappy old neglected NL fairlane, or an xf, with the plastic bumpers half hanging off, the front all grit blasted....something like that, with a dirty great turbo under the bonnet. Should be able to do that for about $2500.

The older lasers (KE????) had the same engine as a mazda (or was it the other way round)?? and the mazda engines also came with a turbo....
So an old laser with a 140kw 1.8L would be a good sleeper! |

Many years ago a mate built a two door corolla with an all alloy V8 in it. I think that it was some kind of pommy V8.

Brother used to catch a ride to work with a guy who had a crappy old Nissan van. Apparently it looked like crap. Only thing was that it had a Cordia Turbo engine dropped in it and it apparently went very, very quick.

i agree on the cortina, be a good choice,as for twin cam corollas there doesnt seem to be many in even half decent conditon anymore i had a datsun stanza (dorky looking thing) with all the datto 1600 common mods done to it ( twin webbers etc) went well a mate has just fitted a EFI rotary turbo to a little old 79 808 Wagon, complete with grandad front window visor, perfect factory interior etc, cost him nder $6000 including the car, hilux diff, front cut which gave him front brakes etc not running yet but sholud fairly fly, has been alot of work though |

my uncles neighbour had a mad sleeper, was a 80 somthing model sigma, painted creme, with hub caps, full stock looking on outside, but under the bonnet there was an LS1 worked...very very fast car and ripped massive burnouts. Also seen a early 80's corolla with this conversion too, except this one would pop monos...too much power for my liking

i would go for a very stock looking Xm/Xp Falcon engine transplant from a XR6 Turbo with the Zf and a EF/EL shorterned diff should make for a very special sleeper.
