Just bought a TDCi which is great except for it has no central interior light. I've seen the XR5's have one and I want to put one in as it is a pain with young kids in the back. Is there a roof mounting point or is it just attached to the roof headlining? :

The older Ghia's had a light in the back.
I've just picked up some vanity lights for under the visors, and will be putting some lighting in the back too. Either the Ghia light, centred towards the back of the roof lining, or two small lights either side of the car, in front of the grab handles. (sourcing these from UK) Here is a wiring guide that shows wiring in the roof. Might help you make a decision on what to do.

Thanks for the replies. I will try to source a focus front light and position it in the middle above the rear seats as I have the side airbags. I will have to run the wiring from the front light above the headlining. Let you know how it goes. :

your the diagram master Leakey. Where do you find all this stuff? I've wondered where the wires are in the roof were.

I had a look in my bags of bits but I must have left it in the car for the wrecker to recycle.
It is always the way. You could just add to the wiring from the light you have. You will need to remove the sun visor screws and the trim around the door. Take care as there is a fair bit of glue holding it all up. The key transponder is near the lamp on the left side so take you time. The wires are stuck to the lining too and you may be tempted to pull on them. Better to get to the wires from the light itself and push a string down to your new hole with a bit of plastic strip. Drag some wire through and join it all up with minimum disturbance to the lining. I have never needed to pull the lining off the roof more than the front edge so unsure what is much further back. The other way is to find the wires in the left A pillar. Colours in the switch should be the same but there is a join in there somewhere and the colours change IIRC. These are the ones to avoid. Just fitted an led light to the rear of my TDCI focus.
I got a circular 11led light from the local electrical wholesalers and mounted the flat led light under the passengers rear grab handle. I then ran the cables above the roof lining to the existing front light, connected via spade terminal crimp lugs to the light. Made a huge difference to the back seats when trying to get the kids in/out at night. |

That looks great, it even matches the headlining color.

Still thinking about these lights, not sure if I can put the lights near the grab handle as I'm worried about the side curtain airbags. :

The side curtain airbags are not interfeared by this light they come out beside the edge of the roof lining, if you pull the rubber back and pull the lining back slightly you will see them there.
Because this type of light is surface mounted it's only the cables going into the lining. |
