Default V8 fuel economy

hey guys, i'm interested in buying a V8 AU.
just wondering what kind of fuel economy you are getting?

my ED averages about 13-14L /100km with everyday leadfooted city driving.
if i drive with economy mode on and actually try and conserve fuel i have got it down to 12L-11.9 /100km

those of you with trip comps, what reading do you get from your everyday driving?

Hi mate.

AUIIIXR8 in adaptive mode getting around 7.2km/L. Combination of stop start and freeway driving. Driving style variable. 95000km.

AU2 XR8 220kw - Average 14-15 litres per 100km (measured) in all city /suburban driving and (too many!) short trips. Getting exhaust and edit done next week and will report any improvements

Yeah as james said do a search im sure you will find something, but if your questioning fuel economy maybe you shouldnt be looking at a V8 IMO

As has been said above the words "V8" and "Fuel Economy" do not go together!

That said though, my AU V8 uses less fuel than a BA I6, long trips it is brilliant. Cant give you figures on L/100km cos I dont care about it that much.

My LTD pulls 13.2 per 100km city cycle and 7.8 highway, better than my old I6 DL LTD and not too shabby considering the extra weight

My 5.6 does a constant 12.5 to 13.5 L/100km driving to work and on a trip the lowest I have had is 9.6 L/100km and on a 13000km trip with all types of driving including the city driving in capital city stays I averaged
11.0 L/100km over the whole 13000KM.

P.S haven't done a whole tank of really heavy city traffic to get a worst city driving figure.

Hope this reply does not sound flippant but if you are concerned about fuel usage why contemplate a V8, you could easily use twice the amount of what your 4.0 goes through.

7.8l/100km whoa. I think the trip computer is going haywaire or you're not completing the tank fill properly. My AU2 5.0 auto does regular 10.2-10.4l/100km on the highway loaded and around town it seldom goes above 13.5l/100km. I always use econ mode on the auto which it seems to like - the 4.0s don't. That happens to be better than the E series 4.0 I had before plus buying the AU V8 was CHEAPER than worse cars in the 4.0 because I bargained against fuel prices. I could drive a full year and still be ahead on the cost of a 4.0!

Buggered if I know how you blokes get such good fuel economy, I tend to potter around like a grandad and it drinks it like there is no tomorrow.
Bugger the expense anyway, you pay to play and there is nothing like playing in a V8.

guys first of all, thanks for the replies they were very helpful.

I'm not actually concerned about fuel economy at all.
I just wanted some figures so i could compare the fuel usage to what I'm already going through. as the figures show, my car is using just as much so i wouldn't go through any more petrol than i already am.

Mines on gas and I consistently get 6km/l ( 16l/100km) around town and just over
7km/l ( 14l/100km ) on a highway run.

ben , dont be looking at these au v8's mate .. stick with the e-series !!

and for the record , my EL since trip computer install is at 16.9l p/100km ..

but its only done about 100km..and thats city driving every day.

No Mistake mate, and I have been driving long enough to know how to fill the tank, the trip computer is fine too, the KM remaining range is usually darn near spot on the money. I was pretty suprised myself as my DL LTD which was an I6 at best used to pull 8.5/100Km on the highway cycle.

7.8 , excellent , but it,s gunna take a serious dive when you take the cardigan off, and remove the brick from under the gas pedal. LOL

P.S don't ever change anything or disconnect the ecu. At that rate I would leave well enough alone

Darn do you think it'll make a difference if I take the crochet rear seat protector off or remove my white lawn bowls hat from the rear deck?
actually I do drive conservatively (except for the occasional run off the lights to clear the cobwebs out) on the highway I just punch up the cruise control and let it do it's thing. As far as changing anything goes, while it's running like this I plan to just let it be, I have always been a fan of the policy "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Please. did you read what you typed ? If you think you won't use any more petrol driving a dirty old Pushrod actuated V8 then you are quite wrong

You will realise this once you have to fill up your fuel tank an extra time each week.

Dont listen, if the dirty old pushrod V8 gets better milage than a BA 6cyl then what does that say for our new technology. I'll stick with my antique, it goes just as hard as a GT and better than a XR8 and has many years of race proven reliability. I rest my case.

Ok, I better clear a few things up here, my information is coming from personal experience not some type of higher arrogance

I own an e series XR8
I also own a 6 cylinder e series vehicle
I have owned a BA XR8 as well

Both my e series cars are also of the same model. (what a coincidence)

Now I KNOW which uses how much fuel from personal experience, not a book or some 13.6843/100km sticker someone found on the side of the road next to the ford dealership which fell off from a new car purchase.

now when I say "dirty pushrod" I was only implying to the engines inferior technological properties, not the actual engine as a whole.

I can tell you that the 302 has the worst ecconomic qualities out of the above mentioned cars.

Quite a small sampling for such a broad all encompassing conclusion !!. I have owned Ford V8s and I6s and even a couple of Ford V6s going back some way but I would hardly be prepared to step up to the plate and call the 302 "inferior" the technology may be a little dated compared to the latest thing, but it has the advantage of using a tried and proven technology with a solid reputation for reliability and dependability. Newer technology does not always yield better ecconomy or substantial increases in performance, but what it often does provide is a plethora of new and interesting ways that these technological improvements can fail, with substantil increases in repair costs over older technology. Like a number of posters on this thread I have actually found my current AU series V8 to be as fuel efficient as I6s I have owned and in some cases to have better fuel ecconomy than the I6. That said there are many variables, driving habits, road conditions, engine condition, weather etc that will influence an engines fuel ecconomy

i find it funny that the misconception is that a V8 is a gas guzzler
mayby from jelous 6cyl drivers, but this car is cheaper than
ealier v6

That is why an EB XR6 with useless "technological improvements" has 161kw while the "tried and proven" V8 302 has 3kw more then that, substantial seing it has 33% more cylinders and a extra litre of capacity.

My passenger seat is open anytime, these T3 engines are an awesome tribute to the dirty old pushrod outdated thingy. GT owners back off real quick to save face when they realise a s**tty old AU is right there with em and might even have the goods, My mates p**s emselves laughing when we have done it.
And I stand by my economy it's checked every fill and and is equal to or better than real life BA I6 and eclipses BA V8's. When I drop a litre/100km I know its time to clean the T/B and air filter.
