Hey All,
I have been looking into my insurance and well I have found out something not so good. They will only allow the car to have 18X8 inch mag wheels, where as the Kaotic mag wheels are 18X8.5 so they say that they have to go. I have looked on the NSW RTA website as well and they say 2 inches larger and 1 inch wider. so they have to go. anyway I will be looking at going to a set of the following: BA 18" XR8 rims BA GTP 18" rims HP design 18" rims K-Speed burnout 18" rims anyone interested in a set of shadow chrome 18" Kaotic rims? |

yer tried that, only 3 will touch me (Under 25!!), Ford insure, NRMA and justcar insurance.
But they all say the same thing. 2 sizes bigger than the wheels fitted from the factory. |

its meant to be from the largest wheel size offered from factory for that model (i think). which i believe was 17x8.
therefore, 18x8.5 is within the legal limits. and NRMA insurance is good with mods as long as they are roadworthy.

Sorry All,
I have just had a look at the RTA document again and noticed that it says "An important requirement for all replacement wheels is that the wheel track must not be increased by more than 25mm beyond the maximum specified by the vehicle manufacturer for that vehicle." So basically that means 1 inch larger than the maximum size wheels fitted to the car? so does that mean I can keep the kaotics? |

Id say so. technically their own rules give you a 19x9 leeway and, if the largest wheels to go on an AU are counted (T series) that goes to 20x9.

NRMA is fine nowadays ... they used to be a pain. They wouldn't even allow an increase in come vehicles. Now they just say as long as it complies with RTA's rulings you are fine.

just keep in mind when increasing the track.. you need to half that to get how much wider per rim... so an increase of 25mm in track.. is only 12.5mm per wheel...but that still keeps your kaotics in the with the rules...

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
It can be kinda confusing though. If retaining factory offset though ... for a track increase of 25mm ... as mentioned this allows an "outward" increase of 12.5mm ... which still equates to 25mm increase in rim width (over the maximum factory wheel size for that model). Must remember if offset doesn't change ... the rim width increases both inwards and outwards. Hope that clears things up. If offset is reduced though (kinda difficult getting it to fit though for the fronts) .... you can increase rim width further ... as long as total track has not exceeded the 25mm leeway.

.
Track has nothing to do with tyre width. The track is measured from the CENTRE of each tyre so no matter how wide your tyres are as long as the rim offset is the same as standard your track won't change. It can also be measured from the inner wall of one tyre to the outer wall of the opposite tyre for the same result. As long as your tyres stay under the guard and fall into the other RTA specs you're ok, ie. 2" over max stock diam. and 1" over max stock width. So on those specs you should be good for a limit of 19 x 9" as Casper said. Bushbasher |
