Default AU Fairmont - NO FOB???

hey all, my dad bought a AU Fairmont (apparently series one by age but series II by seller, tail lights ect) but when he got it home i asked him where the FOB was and he said it didnt come with one.

is it possible to buy one and get it encoded if we dont have a previous FOB?

I believe it is - you just need to use the remote training procedure in the owner's manual.

You definitely need the correct one. The series one fob has 2 buttons - lock/unlock button, and a boot release. Series 2/3 has 4 buttons. One each for lock, unlock and boot, and one for panic alarm. Series 2/3 will not operate in series 1, and vice versa (I have one of each car and have tried the series 2 in my XR8, and it doesn't work).

They are different.
Series I are flat black and are a carryover from EF/EL series.
Series II are more rounded and have different coloured butons
Series I won't work with series II and vice-versa.
$40 to $60 each on e-bay depending on condition.

Sorry for the same info as JC, but his info wasn't there when I started my answer

Can you really train a new keyfob without already having two matching ones? How?

Got any photos? On S2 the chrome boot garnish had FAIRMONT stamped into it, S1 had plain chrome garnish and a FAIRMONT badge on the left side of the boot. S2 will have no holes in the boot whereas S1 will have 2 on the left there. S2 has orange lenses in the headlights, S1 had clear. S2 had a honeycomb grille with no horizontal bar, whereas S1 had a body-colour or chrome horizontal bar in the middle of the grille. A lot of things can be, or may have been, changed or updated (eg grille, boot garnish), but I reckon the headlights will be the clincher, there'd be no way most people would 'upgrade' to S2 Fairmont headlight over S1 headlights, since they look worse with the orange lenses (my opinion, but seems common).

Also a different rear bumper on the S2's, only subtle but it's squarer.

Just remembered the tell-tale sign. Check the cluster. If it has needles that just come out of the central black button then it's S2, whereas if the orange sort of traverses the centre then it's S1. The clusters are not interchangeable, unlike all the stuff I mentioned in my previous post.

As for whether it's SmartLock (E series, series 1 AU) or SmartShield (series 2/3 AU), some late S1's got it anyway, so if it's '99 it's most likely Smartshield (the 4 button fob). Can't remember the exact dates, but if you look at the build date on plate under the bonnet and see what month yours was built you can look it up on here.

I think series II didn't start until mid 2000.
Should be on compliance plate under the bonnet.
The series II have a chip in the key and has the base of the plastic part at right angles to the stem of the key i.e. the plastic part is almost square. It also bulges at the base to accomodate the chip.
The series I key ( i am lead to believe ) is more rounded down towards the stem of the key and no bulge.
Also series I MDC backlight is orange, in series II it is grey

It's series 1 mate

edit: Just found this older thread
http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthr...ht=smartshield
which makes me wonder if there's 3 different fobs, one for series 1, one for series one update with smartshield, and one for series 2. Very odd.

Sit in the car and close the doors.
Turn the ignition key from 'off' to 'acc' and press the rear demister 3 times within 5 seconds. The doors will cycle.
Press lock on first remote. The doors cycle.
Press lock on second remote. The doors will cycle.
Turn the ignition off. The doors will cycle.

quickest and easiest way to check on what series you have is to read the compliance plates. they always have the series number (except the series one, it will just show AU fairmont/falcon sedan/wagon (cross out which ever one doesnt apply))
BTW nice looking fairmont, your dad is a lucky guy

yeah, paid a lil more then i wanted him too (12g's) but for what it is its great. full power options, premium sound apart from sub wood grain (fairlane style) dash, brand new tyres and the paint was almost perfect and has series 2 tail lights. its whisper quiet and shifts perfectly... i love it

Key pad may still have smartlock on it even in AU1 smartshield vehicles.

That's not too bad.

Any remote from EF to AU1 can be used on your car.

There's a couple on ebay that might suit you. Could end up cheaper than getting them from Ford and you can reprogram yourself for nothing, using the method posted by "peterban" in post No. 16.
