Just got back from a road trip home and noticed a few police cars with stopped motorists along the way on the Hume and Burley Griffin Way. Personally I've been raised to flash oncoming traffic to warn them. Just wondering who else does/refuses to do this and how long they do it for?

I said no, but thats not entirely correct.
If its a Booze bus, never. Mobile speed camera, I would get out my car and hold up signs if I could.

In Brisbane at the Queen st mall in the city, a pair of cops have been standing near two intersections on to the mall, across edward st from queen st. They have been booking people that run across when the green man isn't flashing. Never in my life have I seen anyone booked for jaywalking before and I never thought i'd ever see it. But I can tell you now that some revenue raisers actually do. Absolutely pathetic. Especially when Edward street at that point is one way and you can see the traffic for at least 3 blocks (as it goes up a hill).

Similar to Smoked, but i voted Yes.
I am a firm believer that speed cameras do more harm than good, so I always flash. Except for boose buses.

I always flash my lights, their always on the freeway, not on the backroads where people actually die. I think the poll scewed by people who like cars. Not many people on the road flash their lights anymore. I passed a radar on the freeway, so I was flashing my lights, and there was another one up the road. He must have seen me, but did nothing...

I said yes - always flash when in the car. Bit harder on the bike as headlights are already on so people wouldnt really notice me flashing them anyway so usually do the hand signal instead - i.e. twirly finger if you get what i mean.

I posted yes before i read the posts
I also try to warn of dangers; dogs on the road; careless kids etc. Certainly try to warn drivers of anything I see as blatent revenue raising. But never to warn of booze busses / RBT, I firmly believe that if you drink drive you are not only a bloody idiot but should be put off the road, it is the one area of road enforcement that should be targeted more effectivly. PS i am of the opinion that if you only use your low beams you cannot get pinged for it. Might be wrong but haven't been caught yet.

I flash lights for any police activity/animal on the road/ambulance/crash/whatever i think people need WAKING UP for, but only ever with low beam.
Illegal to operate high beams within 200 yards of another vehicle here in SA....

If it means less people get ripped off, then I do it.
(without turning into a negative police thread) I would rather the man power was put into reducing theroad toll. |

You can legally give a quick, momentary 'flash' of high-beam to alert leading vehicles your intention to overtake.
You must also use your indicators in the normal manner. The 'flash' gets attenton, the indicators show your direction-intention.

I always flash, and I even flash when there is no police. Let me give an example. The other day, whilst travelling through Ultimo I saw a riced up honda tailgating a young girl on her P plates. I flashed my highbeams to make them think there was a cop ahead; and low and behold, they backed off and stopped tailgating, fearing there was a radar or patrol ahed. As the offending vehicle drove past, my suspicions about the kind of driver who got off trying to intimidate a young girl were confirmed, from lakemba I believe.
Anyway, this little bit of deception may have prevented an accident because there seems to be very few police patrolling the streets looking out for this kind of behaviour of vehicular intimidation.
