Hi All,
The time has come to start doing a few little things to the old girl _2: First things first, I've got an oxygen sensor on it's way which will hopefully help with fuel consumption a bit. Next I'm looking at changing the intake set up, and while I'd love to get a full G & D set up, I just don't think it's gonna hapen : What i am thinking is something along the lines of a K & N Panel filter and a tickford snorkel. Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing, and or any other suggestions? Thanks!! |

most people will recommend a Tickford/xr6T intake snorkel, then the top half of an EF/L airbox, and a K&N/BMC panel filter. the benifit of the EL airbox lid, is that you can attach a larger pipe to it. where as, you would have to bastardise the AU airbox lid to do that. you wont get massive gains from it, just improved throttle response pretty much.

What HLC said. Also consider extractors and a 2.5' exhaust.

Man that was quick, thanks all!!
Will definitely go with the K&N panel filter, just trying to find 1 on ebay now coz I'm too damn lazy to walk into a shop : Do the ba xr6 turbo intake snorkel fit straight up? Does anyone know roughly what they're worth? HLC, when you say use an EF/EL airbox lid so you can fit a bigger pipe, sorry for the noob question, but what pipe do you mean? If it is worthwhile to change the lid, I actually just bough an EF as a temporary car so I'll just swap the lids between the 2 cars, very handy! |

Cool, thanks, just had a read of it!
I think for now I'll go with the snorkel, ef lid, K&N filter and I will do caspers mod to the airbox of adding another intake to the box. I had never realised the tutorials were there! Very interesting stuff indeed! |

The G&D mod appears the best, but is costly. I don't think you'll get any more benefit from cutting up your airbox, or fitting an E series lid, than you would by simply going the Tickford Snorkel (now known as the XR6T snorkel) on your AU box. The panel filter is the go, and many went to a pod filter setup, but later switched back to the panel. Your car of course, but there's my thoughts. There are almost as many thoughts on this subject as members of the forum, so I'm sure you'll get some more responses, so read up buddy, take your time and what ever you decide, I hope it works well for you. BTW, here's a link to a snorkel currently for sale. I bought one from Ford new for $36, and one second hand off a forum member for $20 (thanks Krissy). He's not stating a price, but asking for offers. http://www.fordforums.com.au/showpos...68&postcount=1 Cheers GK

Cool! I've only ever done intake mods to turbo cars where you do get a reasonable difference, but I'm really not expecting too much out of the old AU!

I think thats why i was impressed at the *slight* difference just a filter made. i only bought it because im putting in a new air box, and wanted to have the full package of induction. Ive a fetish for the smell of k&n filters :P

Dont bother hacking into the airbox. Just get a bigger snorkle and K&N/BMC panel filter. Also, dont expect any improvement from it unless you go for headers and exhaust too as it is a bigger restriction than the intake. Finally, keep the original AU lid and tapered piping, it is not a restriction and actually has a strong argument that it is a better setup than a straight 3" intake (at least to about 150rwkw).

Thanks Casper! Yeah, not really expecting much improvement if anything - it needs a new air filter and I figure I may as well get a decent one and while I'm at it, may as well chuck a new snorkel on. Any improvement is a bonus.
Will definitely be getting an exhaust done in the near future, just got a few other little things to do first though namely a tranny cooler and fix a few window switches that have just started sticking!! |

I just installed a BA XR8/GT Pod in my AU2 6 cyl wagon, and it seems to be heaps better than the old square box. It has been modified to take the Tickford snorkel as well.
There's one for sale in the Parts for sale section - well worth considering. http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=56459

That looks really good JC - did you have to modify much to fit that, or was it a straight fit?

priavte 9 - Yes, it did require a bit of fiddling to get it in - the standard scoop that comes with these (not the snorkel) had to be trimmed by about 100mm as it's designed to fit in behind BA lights, not AU. Also, the piping into it is custom, but is effectively just 3" mandrel bent at about 35 degress, 150mm from the end.

From What Dealers did you guys purchase your XR6T intakes for $35?
I purchased a K&N filter this morning and figure while im under the bonnet, i might as well add the intake.

I ended up getting the BA intake from Etheridge Ford for $38.
Heres pics of the install with the old intake in the back ground. The new pipe has near an inch more width and on the first drive with it and the K&N Panel filter, i coud feel the engine responding better. Very happy with the results so far, only time will show if it improves my economy or not.
