With all the 6 owners getting some performance mods to their car, I am curious as to what you hope to achieve with your upgrades. I believe that the only real way to any descent performance is with a V8. Ignore all the nonscence of turbo's as they arn't even in the same class.
So when you sat down to plan your mods, what were you looking for. What was your goal?

Nonsense of Turbo's??? Whats wrong with them? I thought they were a legitimate way of getting good power from any (most) engine(s)?

I want me a nasty cam and edit. Maybe a headjob....... and some porting.
It'd be nice to clear 200kw at the flywheel. I reckon stocky 157kw at the fly is optimistic, however. |

hmmm .... when i get the cash.
Blower + LPG = mountain moving torque at idle + cheap running costs. great for heavy load/low revving work .... just what i need for work. Beats wringing the neck out of my current engine and cooking the auto in the process.

If I had cash to burn, I'd be doing an engine swap like you Bucky, but not a wheezer, stroked or otherwise...

Hotting up a six without a turbo is only going to impress boy racers. You can do what u like and spend what u like on a six.. but doing the same or simular mods to a V8 is the way to go. If ur serious about performance get a V8.

Yeah. Wanted to do up an engine, but didn't know where to start. Best option was to get a carbi V8. Turning out well so far....

Personally i didn't want a v8 this time around , had my fun with them in the past , the vct is enough of a fuel pig as it is , but as far as why mod or what hoping to achieve , for me its just a bit of personal satisfaction knowing i've done something different to it , weather it has gained performance or not ( so long as it don't loose any ). I'm actually curious to find out how hard 1 of the I6's can go these days - with a turbo or supercharger or whatever or not - to say a turbo or supercharger or something is totally something different is crap - its a mod , just like any other mod, back in around 1983 i would of agreed with ya that a v8 is the only way to go - as fuel was cheap back then and most 6's didn't have much go , but nowerdays for such a stock engine and mass produced engine the I6 is , it's got plenty enough power for the usual driving around and having a bit of fun here and there , also alot cheap for insurance , p platers or not . I definatelly haven't missed the v8 since having the XR6 vct ! .

my reasoning behind geting my AU was the fact that its available in gas from the factory.
Like Mechan1k said, LPG + BLower give monsterous torque with awesome economy. I personally believe lpg potential is fantastic and these 6;s were build to run on it.

personally, nothing beats pure naturally aspirated grunt, you want more horsies, you get a bigger motor. Turbos are cheating.

Bucky forgot to take his pills again!
Bucky - here's a question for you. When you sat down and worked out that you wanted a body kit that made your car look like a T3 from the back, what were YOU thinking? Why do that? You are only fooling yourself by making it look pretty. It's still only a 6. Anmd what's with the BA bulge on a 6? Honestly, with a kit like that, you NEED to do engine mods, just so the car has the cred/power to back up the look.

My goals were simple. But this is about performance not bling bling. I have no I6 mods planned. It will remain a stocker for ever :

I have a semi-modded 6 and an 8, and some days the 6 does feel as good as the 8 - then I wake up! Nah, really, both cars are great, and if I could have 2 8s I would, but the 6 does very well at family duties, and the gassed 8 is my daily driver/commuter/weekend warrior.

My original goal with the ute was stock engine power at the rear wheels without FI.
Now that I've done what I wanted to do with it, and still don't have stock engine power at the rear wheels, it's time to look at FI for me...

Well I was after decent response from a modern OHC engine.
V8's sound good but like too much of a drink for me. Simply put for a family wagon V6 commodore or Falcon six which would you pick? Now V8 family wagon Commodore kills the Falcon hands down. Still don't like them but they do go harder stock and even harder with basics like edit and catback only. |

This is going to hurt.... alot. lol
There isnt alot of difference performance wise between a 6 and an 8 these days. Especially between falcons upto AU. Some cases the 6 is quicker.. the extra 2 cylinders only slows them down hahaha. Very mild tickling of the 6 can make them go, and go well. When I was planning to mod mine, and actually modded it (pfft mods) ie- exhaust, intake and diff, it was mainly just to get it to breathe a little better, go a little better, sound better and rumour has it - get better economy. people say why a 6? .. why not? I dont have too much problem giving the average 8 and turbo ricer good scare.. and as sad as it is, the falcon XR8's are easy to whoop in stock form. (with some exceptions *cough* Whoosha). Bodykits and things like that, like Buckies car, may not have the go to match the show, but it wouldnt be slow. Plus you can only go as fast as the sign posted speed limit, and I dont know if Bucky is the type to drag race. Why not make it look good? |

I was really happy with my engine mods to date but realised that if I really wanted to haul ar$e I'd need a turbo. Its not in yet but by god, tax time will make it that much sooner.
The lure of a turbo was too much for me. Especially as the kits are reasonably priced too.
