G'day, my name is Neale, i'm looking for some advice on how to remove and replace the steering rack on a late 2005 Hyundai Getz. For example does the k frame have to be lowered.Thank you.

Looking at the engines and boxes, it seems quite “normal”. I’d suggest: Split the hub carrier ball joints, unbolt the drop links, loosen but not separate the tie rod ends and unbolt the rack from subframe, there’s probably a lateral motor mount to release as well.
Then the subframe can come down with wishbones and sway bar attached. Most cars you’d next disconnect the steering fluid lines and cap off, disconnect the input shaft after marking for reassembly, and finally remove the rack by detaching the (already loosened) tie rod ends. The benefit of doing it this way is usually much better access to the fluid line connections of the rack. |

Yes you do have to drop the subframe, not a big job if you have a hoist, a bit harder if you are trying to do it on the ground, as above its easier to drop the subframe with the lower wishbones attached and there is a mount to unbolt too, disconnect the steering column from inside from memory.

You are a top bloke for wanting to fix your Grandmother's car, but if you really love her, consider getting her into something that is less of a bus-biscuit.
