Default Ranger Divi Vans

Some good news for the locals, one would like to thing the R&D that is kept here attributed to this outcome.

At least they are buying something with australian input.

Only 200 a year seems pretty small volume though.

90 units down from the Colorado contract.
Spouse its a start.
Looks like more future projects in the making :
In addition to the Ranger divi-vans, Ford SVE is working with Victoria Police on the design and development of Ford Ranger 4x4s for off-road and other specific operational duties.

Divvy van or paddy wagon, just a slang description - wouldn't want the minor street crims mixing together to morph into zombies in this day and age.

Seen a few up north and over the west so rangers are an obvious choice for other states police.

Can someone explain the need for the divvy van?
seems Unique to Australia, other countries use normal Vans or have internal partitions in their cars

Cause without them, how are people going to chant "you're going home in the back of a divvy van" at the cricket?

I have a bit of past experience with this subject!

Sedans with partitions are okay for transporting a compliant suspect or offender. The trouble is that the side and rear windows are no match for a cranky 'client' and they can be easily kicked out. This happens a lot more often than you probably realize.

The downside is the cost of repairs and then the downtime for that vehicle whilst the repairs are carried out. There's only a limited number of police vehicles assigned to the various patrols and available for crews to use. It hurts when they're out of action.

The divisional van alleviates the damage issue as it has a designated custody pod with no glass or hanging points etc. Cranky pants occupant is only going to hurt himself if he starts trying to damage that one.

And as Gasso pointed out - much easier to clean up the mud, blood, vomit, urine and faeces afterward!

Why would you want to listen to a stinking drunk throwing up or someone who is off their head.

That is the new Brawler vans which I think is a wee bit small compared to the old ones.
I wonder how many people you could fit in that thing?

I helped build Vic Pol's VW Transporters about a decade ago - they're called 'brawler vans'.

The rear door comes off and this cell module thing is put in the back that matches up to the opening of the back of the van.

It started my hatred for VW - the way they are put together defies logic

Given that Ford maintains a local engineering capability, I wonder if they'd consider doing low volume special purpose vehicles in house - IE second stage manufacturing.

Their engineering capability as an OEM far exceeds those of the second stage manufacturers who do emergency vehicles etc.

They'd just need a small crew of people to do the modifications that the engineering team has designed - it would mean very high quality special purpose vehicles rather than the dodgy bull**** that is manufactured now.

Queensland Police also use the Hyundai iLoad vans with an air-conditioned aluminium custody pod fitted as well. They're great vehicles for urban/sealed road situations but not much chop in off-road situations such as unsealed tracks, parks and reserves where they're sometimes required to be driven.

The ute-based divisional vans are generally built on a 4WD platform so as to offer a bit of extra ground clearance and all wheel drive capability when required. They're generally more common in the regional areas.

The custody pods are removed from the vehicle once it's decommissioned and then refitted to the new replacement vehicle whilst it's being fitted out with the required emergency lighting/sirens and other equipment. The pods are very well made and have a service life of quite a few vehicles.

Thanks for the explanation.

I have wondered for a while why they were choosing 4x4 utes rather than vans.

Did Ford Australia have direct input with the WA Rangers? Maybe this is the difference to the Vicpol setup.

WAPOL and FoA worked in partnership on fit out of the Rangers and modifications to heavier duty wiring, securing of PoI pods.

I'm surprised it took this long. The Ranger would be a perfect fit for a divy van.
