Purchased a 2013 ST (demo) a few weeks ago and absolutely loving the car.
However, I have noticed that after the engine warms-up there is what sounds like a tapping noise, very similar to pinging. I have checked the noise when the car is idling. I'm running the car on Optimax 98, but it I sounds more like a tappet noise. Obviously, I'll take it in to the dealer, just interested if anyone has similar or heard anything around the traps. Thanks |

It's the fuel injectors, direct injection motors can be a bit noisy in this regard.
Mine has been the same from day dot, all of the others I've heard have also been the same. It's a hell of a lot noisier with the engine cover off too. |

Thanks WILDB.......I had a Focus LS-LX (2006) previously, and the engine was much quieter compared with the ST.
I'm loving the ST though and power aside, it's also a great handling car. |

If you have any doubts about Fords GDi engine being noisey, have a listen to a Golf Gti or R engine.

mine is so noisy, not a tapping noise more like a whuring noise, that sounds like a bearing, i think all the ST's have it but mine is just louder as comparing it to my brothers there is a difference. Ford have noted it but said its within acceptable limits or some ****, its really noticable when you are next to another car for the sound to bounce off it. its high pitch, almost like the turbo whistle but not quite

My dad's 2012 BMW Z4 had the 2-litre DI turbo petrol engine, and it sounded like a tractor idling. It's weird, but normal.

Idle is fine in respect to diesel/tractor noise, this is a rather high pitch swuring noise instead

I have the same sound but its 'normal'. Dropped mine off at the dealer the other morning and when I was at the bus stop I saw another ST drive past and I heard this noise from the other side of a busy road

Yeah its weird, you can hear it more when you are in the car, i just go my bro to drive my car past me and i couldn't really hear it, just the turbo spool and exhaust. I was told the same thing that its within acceptable limits. Im hoping once i change the oil it will quieten down a bit, was goin to switch at 7.5km but the bottle says to use it after the first manufacture oil change

Haha whats there to explain? Was going to change the oil at 7500km but the royal purple says its recommended to change it after the first manufacturer change which is 15000km, when that rolls around i might supply them the oil and filter for a reduced price

I don't see why you cant use it straight away that's all. Having to wait a certain period before changing over to a synthetic oil on a car designed to use synthetic oil does not make sense.
Also you probably won't get a discount off the capped price servicing for supplying the oil, I've already asked

Yeah i dont really wanna wait either, its the api licensed stuff so i might just go ahead and change it at 7500, i dont want to waste money and have ford change the oil at 15 just to then change it back, hmmmm

If you want your own oil just supply it at a service interval. I bet they will not attempt to enforce some minute level of characteristic that equates to their minimum level of requirement. I bet anything of 5W30 these days will suffice.

That's more or less what my dealers service manager said, any 5w30 is good

From what I have read about these lovely ST's I suspect if you apply sufficient pressure to the accelerator, any unpleasant noises soon disappear.

Why use RP oil though? It's just overpriced for what it is, for the money you outlay you may as well get mainlube.

Seeing as oil was discussed in this thread, thought it might be appropriate to post that Supercheap are now selling Valvoline Synpower FE oil which meets the 913C Ford spec

Don't really see a problem with recycled base oil. As a product it's obviously still been tested and meets the approvals on the tin.

Not sure why the comment about recycled mineral oils was relevant to a fully synthetic product which is what the post was about
