I have been told by someone at Ford that the Territory nameplate will continue post 2016 as it has a good following with the general public.
How, you ask? Made in Thailand and imported back into Australia. Not saying this is gospel, but seemed to make sense.

The free trade agreement that, in part, brought upon the demise of local manufacturing, will be used to sell us back our own car.... Seems very probable unfortunately

That's how it will happen. It will be either a new diesel less than 3L due to the Thai tax requirements, and maybe an Ecoboost engine of some sort. I6 will be gone I think. The cost for Thailand customers will plummet though I doubt our prices will plummet.

Exactly. Ford aren't ready to give up on the Territory name. It's been good for them and it has built a good following.

I wonder if we will get the Everest rebadged as a Territory instead. Very similar vehicle.

Did they even send another batch after that 100? It would need to gain more traction there first wouldn't it? Good idea though, if it's an aspirational flagship now, bringing the price down would make it popular.
What would be great is if it's an evolution of the current platform! I won't believe it unless they start local assembly before 2016, but I guess some of the tooling would need to be shipped, unless its an all new model? |

Ranger based 'Territory' seems plausible.

They will probably just slap the Territory badge on whatever imported junk they replace it with, like an Edge or Explorer.
The Ranger SUV will be out before Territory finishes so they can't stick the name on 2 models, unless its like the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. Territory and Territory Sport? |

We'll get the next gen Ford Edge rebadged as a Territory most likely.

It's not Thailand's fault that the large Australian Fords have a limited market while small cars and diesel utility vehicles manufactured by Ford in Thailand are popular around the Asia-Pacific region (common market segments around the region).

One way free trade agreement with Thailand that our Gov signed too quickly effectively allowing Thailand full access to our market and Australia no access to Thailand's market.

Example: The small car segment exists in both Australia and Thailand. The large car segment exists in Australia (shrinking), but is almost non existent in Thailand (where a Camry with a 2.5L engine is considered large.) Last edited by AG3; 26-05-2013 at 11:37 AM. |

We manufacture very little now, & export even less, it's all imports (one way not in our favour). This might be the lucky country, but when we stop the mining &/or others don't want our minerals any more, Australia is screwed, & we'll be facing a bigger crisis than Greece. |

This is how it works in Thailand, as explained to me by a Thai person when I was over there.
Suppose a car manufacturer (ie Ford) wants access to the Thailand marketplace, they must get permission from the King of Thailand. If the King of Thailand says "yes, you can sell cars in Thailand" there is a stipulation that the cars MUST be manufactured in Thailand. Then there is an extra stipulation that you can employ foreign workers, but for every foreign worker employed, you must employ 4 local Thai people. This is not free trade by definition because for an Australian manufacturer it rules out any export potential at all. The 100 Territory's that went over last year was I think to allow the key figures in Thailand to test the vehicles out and explore the likelihood of manufacturing them in Thailand. Thailand is not an importer. BTW, for those who haven't been to Thailand in a while, it's not a backward rickshaw riding with the occasional donkey style of asian country. There are more new cars over there than here in Oz. Everything is new, cars are cheap, the government gives you your first car tax free, Thailand is booming with technology, business and manufacture.

Well, the 2014 update has something being done powertrain-wise, don't know what, but it would be cool if the single turbo 3.0 found its way in.

Keeping the Territory name is a good idea. Its a great seller. Most punters have no idea where their cars are made. Most dont care either.
