Police to extend speed cameras to suburban streets
Article from: The Sunday Mail (Qld) By Darrell Giles December 20, 2009 12:00am SPEED cameras are coming to a suburb near you. In an unprecedented move, police will extend speed camera operations into suburban streets as part of the State Government's two-year Road Safety Action Plan. And they could be in unmarked vehicles with no warning signs. Police have been able to use speed cameras only where the speed limit is 60km/h or above, with hand-held radar in sub-60km/h zones. But Police Minister Neil Roberts said laws would be introduced early next year for secret speed-camera vehicles to park in streets with 50km/h and 40km/h limits. He said the speed limit enforcement mantra for 2010-11 was Anywhere, Anytime. "All streets and roads must be as safe as we can make them. Far too many people are dying unnecessarily on our roads," he said. "Speeding and rat-running through suburban streets is also a significant concern in many communities. "Motorists will need to consider whether the vehicle or motorcycle they are speeding past is an unmarked police vehicle or if the vehicle parked in their suburban street is fitted with a speed camera." The Sunday Mail revealed exclusively last week a raft of new measures to catch speedsters as part of the Government's road safety program. There will be undercover speed-camera vehicles with no warning signs, point-to-point speed cameras, and digital speed/red light cameras. The covert vehicles will be in a variety of models, makes, ages and colours. Drink-driving would also be targeted, with alcohol ignition interlock devices. Mr Roberts yesterday said the significant change in policy reflected concern at a road toll likely to top 340 this year.

More wasted Police duties. Go catch some burglars instead of Mr smith trying to get to work on time. What happened to only setting up cameras in accident black spots?

people will be dicks no matter what, whats worse is when people think something is unjust they will choose to ignore it/rebel against it... you see problem is not fining everything that moves, its education. wont solve the odd idiot doing 60k over in a suburban street but they are less likely to do so when they realise they arent as in controll as they thought they were pre defensive driver training.. argue all you like about it giving them a mentality they can speed, for alot of people it just makes them more aware drivers, and less likely to do dumb stuff in a closed enviroment when the odds are stacked against them.

Wake up this is the real world. Ignorant small minded black and white thinking people like yourself are the reason why the world is in the state it is, you don't think for yourself and let people do it for you... Reality check: The human brain is said to speed around 8 times every 30 minutes. That's because we have what's called sub conscious, something the law neglects, or more truthfully takes advantage of. Also slow speeds make the driver comfortable, the brain decreases adrenaline and relaxes losing alertness making slower speeds more dangerous. Of course I'll probably have to tell you that I don't mean 200k's. The latter study was conducted by the RTA. To not speed ever would contradict human neurology. So you're some magical robot are ya? Bit more varaibales there than black and white aye mate? There's one of you in every similiar thread to this on the forum.

the problem with this whole unmarked speed camera car thing is the offender might not even know that they have been caught speeding until they get the fine in the mail, so they will continue doing the same thing, so it is a delayed deterant, Bligh seems to be much more concerned with revenue raising than detering speeeding motorists

yea becuase the world is black and white...
so if you want to be a sheep and believe the propaganda that by more speed camera's will = less deaths then suit yourself. but it comes down to the fact, for the past 10 years they have been sprooking the same ideas, bigger fines, more camera's, more loss of points... and STILL we have this road toll issue. if they were SERIOUS about saving lives they would fund a better licance system, and do a mandatory retrain every 10-15 years and every 5 after you are 70. want to reduce the road toll, get better solutions, not beat the same old dead horse. and my comment from before still stands.

Its a great idea and the quicker they bring it out the better. As has already been mentioned, drive sensibly and obey the law, you have nothing to fear. Bring it on.

50, 70, 60, 40, 60, 80, 90 (Gympie-Cooroy, don't get me started with this one!), 80, 90, 100, 110, 100, 110, 80, 60 speed zones. I remember when I learnt to drive. Whilst driving relatively unsafe cars (compared to today's cars) on terribly dangerous highways, we kept a bit of an eye on our speed but mainly concentrated on vision and road conditions. We still drove at speeds similar to today. 25 years later, now that "speed kills", speed zones change every 5 minutes and fines increase, the tables have turned. We now drive safer cars on better roads at the same speeds, yet watching the speedo has become time consuming and counter productive, especially for learners! |

If you have a problem with that then maybe your motivations are not road safety and road funding but personal responsibility. You wouldn't be so fired up if you weren't a cronic hoon driving a V8 owner. If your peronal priorities laid in cars getting you from A to B you wouldn't even notice the speed camera or have to deal with them. Your just affraid of having your fun spoilt because they are cracking down on people like yourself. They end is near. |

I have no problem with speed cameras, WHEN THEY ARE USED AS ORIGINALLY INTENDED !! ie in KNOWN BLACK SPOTS.
But at the bottom of hills, behind bus shelters,in bushes etc. I DO !! They are no longer used as intended. Just blatant revenue raising. The camera is regularly positioned near where I live and there hasn't been a fatality in this area for 3 years !!!! Known black spot !!! bah humbug !!

Turbo/V8 power can be used for manythings than speeding, as discussed a Datsun 120Y is more than capable of getting you caught. Overtaking, towing, driving in sand could be the main reason I purchased my cars... |

Not one driver is perfect. Everyone has and will speed. Fact is, some people get caught, others don't. The speed camera's are not about road safety, but paying off the debt that capitain Bligh got QLD into.
