can someone please tell me what is wrong with the word s h i t t y. It is used to describe something in a manner we are all familiar with.I think the swear filtering goes a bit too far sometimes.

For some reason it was in the filter but possibly to stop it from being misspelt!
I've removed it for now.

Cheers

The words that are in the swear filter have been chosen to ensure that the site meets our stated goals of being family friendly.

Firstly I commend you guys for wanting to do the right thing in this regard, but this is 2009 and any kid who is old enough to get on here and read and type something is old enough to lisen to the radio and watch television where a word such as s h i t t y does not even rate as they are exposed to far worse on the radio and television on a daily basis(not that I think it is right) .I tried not to swear around my boy when he was young but he hears the radio the television ,movies and my friends who would slip on occassions.I think by the time he was about 12 I did,nt bother anymore because I thought I was wasting my time ,he heres this evryday, would say the f word with his mates just as I did when I was in primary school. the majority of people on here would be well over 15 I would assume. do you guys know the average age of members on here just out of curiousity? So you can keep it family friendly without going to far is what I am trying to say .

Wrong is wrong, it cannot be changed because the majority accepts it as right. If this line isn't drawn you'd end up asking why the "f" word is filtered, or why this site doesn't allow porn, or why buggery isn't allowed.

for me I wish the swear filter would substitute removed words with something instead of just ripping them out of the sentence, it can make reading posts with words that have been ripped out seem like they were written by somebody with tourettes or something what I mean is something like the below

make sure they dont !filtered! the bubbles with a pin

instead of

make sure they dont the bubbles with a pin

(using the bubbles under pinstripe example above)

a swear filter is a good thing but sometimes knowing that it has ripped words out and from where in the sentence can help read what the poster is trying to say just a suggestion :

your sounding like a nazi. I was asking about the word s h i t t y , and how is it used to decribe something in a matter we and everybody else is familiar with .who would be offended by this(if you are then you should not go out in public or own a radio or tv for that matter). you say wrong is wrong la de da de da ,and that the majority accept this as right .THIS IS WRONG, IT HAS BEEN DECIDED BY ONE OR A FEW AND NOT THE MAJORITY. If you had a poll and asked if this word should be accepted ,I am sure you will find the majority would accept this, feel free to prove me WRONG.

It matters not if the majority accept swearing or not.

What does matter is what the site Admin implement. In this case they have built in a swear filter that is not to be evaded as part of the site rules, these are the same rules every agrees to abide by when joining.

I wouldn't feel a bit surprised by your answer if I asked what your thoughts would be that a nazi has a little more thought for basic etiquette.

Is it hard to express yourself without resorting to foul language? Generally, or on here, I mean. It is a simple language for us to understand, there's plenty of ways to enhance your vocabulary. You're on the internet, make good use of it?

Plus, I hear the "F" word on countless occasions every day, but I've never heard it on the 6 o'clock news. Have you?
That wasn't more my point, as much as to say there needs to be a level of decency that needs to be maintained, which includes drawing a line somewhere.

falc'man, if you didn't have so many of those little smily faces next to your signature, I would give you a dozen more.
That's a fundamental given (Wrong is wrong, it cannot be changed because the majority accepts it as right ), a given that could and should be used in relation to a whole lot of other threads

The user has been asked to remedy this and it can happen because the user names are censored by a different list.

Times have changed and some words are really quite inoffensive to some but appalling to others. Hard to find middle ground and keep everyone happy.

I find some of the misuse of signatures more offensive - nothing to do with Fords or cars but getting sarcastic digs at people or using this place for some hidden agenda and bullying. Sad people a bit lost in life, I feel.

Let's accept the swear filter is there to keep things under control - look at the bigger picture not worry too much at the words that you have picked up. I have also had words removed which surprised me too.
