Default Wearing the aussie flag as a cape....

does it annoy you when people do?

This has come up because watching the news last night I was disgusted to see people at Gallipoli with the aussie flag painted on their faces and wearing the flag as a cape as if it were some sort of party. Personally I can't stand people who do this.

So you think being wrapped in the flag of the country you love is wrong?? I think it is great to see, to me it doesn't get any more loyal than that. More of it i say.

I think its great to see.

But when used in the wrong fashion eg. The Cronulla incident, sadly it becomes a symbol of negativity. But this isnt the place to discuss racism, or the cause or effects of such. Sadly, every young man many hundred Km's away suddenly felt it was nessessary to display a flag as a means of support.

Theres a good article in this month's Rolling Stone. The other sad point is, people tend to see waving the flag and having pride in your country as a bad thing especially when it represents a primarily white, western culture. All racist movements and groups that have united under the idea and use the flag as a symbol aside, being patriotic is a good thing.

Yes. It shows disrespect.

I can't help it if you have no respect for the Australian flag and make me fill sick. Are you also one of those people that leaves the Australian flag out at night, or hangs it vertically with the Union Jack in the top right corner?

I agree with BJ - in my opinion, I impart no disrespect to the flag whilst I wear it on Australia Day. Call me a bogan or yobbo, I don't care. It's the one day I wear the flag as a cape, and I wear it with pride.

I also march with my grandfather and family on ANZAC day every year, and I do so proudly.

I see no problem with people loving their country and showing it in that manner.

I wasnt that long ago that there was a big movement to change the flag, but now it seems more popular than ever before. So if someone wants to show there pride in Aus by draping a flag over their shoulders,.. than good on 'em

At an ANZAC day service I dont see the issue.

What I dont understand is when people parade the flags and capes when its not an Aussie holiday(Australia day, ANZAC day etc). Now I love this country as much as the next person but I dont see the point in promoting the country in the country itself. We're living in Australia you dont have to tell me your Australian.

agreed! although i also agree with EDfutura25, i've seen many people who are ****ed wearing the flag as a cape do stupid things...
e.g Australia Day at Geelong - young guy, cops smashed him to the ground, got to ride in the back... : )

How many of you actually realise that it is a sign of disrespect to allow the flag to touch the ground?

So it's a no-go to wear it as a cape if you're short then?

Ex soldier perhaps? That went out with wearing hats indoors. Need to remember they don't teach tradition or respect at school anymore.

My pet hate is the eureka stockade flag being flown by noddies who don't even know what it represents.

Don't generalise....

The 2 school captains at my school know what it means if the flag touches the ground while in the process of adding, raising and removing the flag from the pole.

When I was a youngin in scouts and venturers these valuable lessons were taught to me, and I make it a point to pass it on to my kids.

What a no brainer thread, the Aussie flag should be promoted at any event and across the world, how UnAustralian not to, display it with pride and fly it high.

I wear the Aussie flag for a cape, two days of the year, ANZAC day, and on Australia day. Rest of the year it hangs proudly in my house.

Proud to be an Aussie, why not show it off when it matters!

Seems I am alone on this. I have no issue in displaying pride for your country but all the people I have ever witnessed (and not just on the news) doing this are the same people who get ****ed and cause trouble. Plus I just feel doing it on Anzac day isn't right.

I've seen plenty, in fact far more, people ****ed and behaving badly that aren't wearing the flag, so therefore your logic is flawed........

I therefore believe that the inference that wearing the Australian flag leads to people to drink excessive amounts of alcoholic beverages and therefore behave badly whilst in public places to be flawed.

Do you now comprehend?
No, his logic isn't flawed, your just mis-understanding his point.

If your going to get "excessivly drunk" inturn making a fool of yourself, starting fights, yelling and screaming rude comments etc disgracing yourself and AUSTRALIAN Values (Which have gone down the drain lately in both young & old) then do not do so while holding her beloved National Flag claiming to be proud to be an Australian, might I add wearing it as if it was some sort of fashion statment.

I don't mind it at sporting matches, like cricket etc. or even Australia Day (As the only true Australia Day is 25th April/11th November). When it comes to ANZAC day I agree it shouldn't be used as a "shirt" not to say it CAN'T be draped across ones shoulders provided that the upper left be across the left shoulder when looking at the person from the back. (ie. looking at the flag). I believe it should also be "draped" horoziontly.

Im not going shout or scream at someone if they do different, as whats above is my opinion, just as along as they are doing so for the right reasons, and not just doing the fashion statment attention grabbing stunts most young people do today like 13 year olds in shorts you can't behind over in. :

One thing that did upset me when I visited my local (Ballarat) ANZAC Day service was when the ceremony started and the guests were talking, people just kept talking as if they were at the pub, alot of people were trying to listen and you just felt like yelling at people to STFU.

I don't think any of this is enough to break out a newspaper over as I'd hate to think all we remember of such a day of rememberance is a few little things that everyone would have a different opinion on anyway, or not why the day is there in the first place.

Perhaps Australia isn't the right country for you to be living in if you are offended by this type of patriotism if you are offended. I have heard that there are few ships with empty backloads heading towards Indonesia!!

Get over it.

Yeah o.k. maybe all my years as a scout and an army cadet taught me the flag was to be respected. If it were to touch the ground we were to burn it (never happened). This has nothing to do with whether or not I love my country but to me and the way I was brought up, I feel it is disrespectful. As I said no problem with showing your patriotism just don't wear the flag as a cape.

To me it's fine under the right circumstances worn by mature people.
When it's worn by dumbass, immature, excessively drunk, shirtless bogans on a day that has nothing to do with Australia or it's history, then it becomes disrespectful and uncalled for.

You can tell whether someone is bearing the flag for true pride or just to be loud and seek attention, the difference between the two is clear.

I agree with this.

But I've recently started to find a lot of the southern cross tattoos offensive, which makes me sad.
It's my flag too, but then a minority of people use it for their own purposes and tarnish it.
