Well, its a case of "Mission Accomplished" for the media then isn't it? They practically ran the guy out of town. Pity.

Bit like Skaife too..

Hayden will stand in history as probably our greatest opening batsman, i still remember watching his H/S and world record innings of 370...
Its a pity he didn't get the opportunity for the fans to say goodbye...

It's happened before, remember when Gilchrist came into the team after Heals was bumped out? I think an awful lot of people wanted Healy to go out on his terms, so much so Gilly got booed in one of his first games. (May have been Healy's home ground)

1 bad season?! Short memory. Look at his run of scores over the last 3 seasons. Only the odd big score made it look respectable. He seemed to pull a ton out of the hat just when the tongues were wagging for him to step aside.

He was a hell of a batsmen and paired with Langer quite easily the best opening combination Australia has ever had but he put himself before the team the last few seasons and tried to hang on, IMO selfishly.

Mark Taylor was given a lot more latitude due to his captaining ability I would say. He did have a longer patch of poor scores but the team didn't suffer for it, they were still conquering all. Hayden has given us poor starts vs India and South Africa and we lose both series. I'm actually surprised he survived this long without being given the nudge.

His dominance on the field will be remembered, especially those that had to bowl at him when he was ontop of his game, but his best years are well and truly behind him and it's sad that he didn't go out on a highnote but had to be given the shoulder after 2 series losses on the trot.

Taylor was captain at the time, granted. Hayden knew at the start of summer he needed to make a score. The poor bloke couldn't make one out of 9 attempts. Still he leaves with an averge over 50 which gives him 'great' status. Big shoes to fill.

Had a unusual number of ordinary decisions go against him though... from memory 3 or 4 weren't actually out.!
Pretty hard to maintain or regain form and keep your confidence when you keep getting given out when you're not.

He really should have been given a spot in at least the twenty20 side. Just the chance to get out there, have a big hit with a bit of a lighter atmosphere could have done him a world of good. See how he went from there.

I'm not a big fan of the Aussie Cricket team (as some of you know :P), but I'm a massive fan of Matty Hayden - It sucks to see the one of the best, and fairest, players you guys have retire without a propper farewell.

I hope the media are happy, bunch of tossers. He didn't deserve that kind of grilling. I was hopeing he got a century or atleast a fifty in that last test but I guess it wasn't to be. The media did it to Skaife, and now they've done it again.

It was a light-hearted comment mate, did you miss the :P that followed that comment? My post had nothing but praise for MH.

Oh, and New Zealand just won the series against the WI, an hour ago (yet we 'got done' according to you?). Lets see if Australia are still capable of the same.

Mine was 'meant' to be light hearted too. I misinterpteted the news (playing in the background whilst still at work). All I emenber is Gayle gettin' off to a flyer and I thought they said he seeled it. Appears good 'ol Duck/Lew had other ideas and you guys clinched it. I still remember you guys flogged us 3-0 prior to the last World Cup in NZ. You'se have the potential to forge another upset even over here. Bring it on...
