It won't work. Simple as that.
On a side note, there are already things blocked on the internet by government. Certain news groups are already blocked by ISPs.

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum...s.cfm?t=967413

On a personal note, it should be up to parents to monitor net usage. I know that if this scheme comes out, I'll be opting out myself, even when I have kids. I'll be watching them like a hawk if they use the internet.

That maybe true. But has absolutely nothing to do with my statement.
Some people think Rudd is going to give us an choice as to whether we want to use this filter. All I said is there won't be this option. Don't get me wrong,
I'm dead against this form of censorship and will be interested to see how encompassing this filter is eg. will they try and stop the use of torrent sites?

Torrent Sites (all P2P), Kiddie Porn (all Porn), Anti Government Sites (all websites). They'll claim it is an Anti-Terrorism measurement, and the unwashed masses will just eat it up. I am dead against censorship, especially of the last truly free realm. Once they get their greasy mitts on the Internets, that's the end folks, Game Over...

Remember that governments can be changed...

Edit: This is a great thread, as so far, it has stayed away from Politics. Please keep it that way.

"But has absolutely nothing to do with my statement." Actually it does , if I can work it out in seconds so can most anyone who wants to , once brought to the attention of the wowsers without actually informing them of how the whole scenario is defeated and no amount of face saving can or will help them look anything except ill educated and badly informed .
There must be choices as we all have rights which is clipped need to be emphasized at the poll both and by political agitation , I do my part so the question is do you ?

Exactly. Parents are responsible for what their children look up, so not everyone else should have their usage blocked because of it.

why can;t they just leave us the eff alone?

deadset im sick of how everything these days requires somebody to be watching over our shoulder with us being wrapped in bubblewrap, its pathetic.

what ****es me off the most is that you can;t opt out, if you do you're only opting out of the p0rn side of it, they'll still block illegal sites, then once we get used to it they'll start blocking every thing,

I guess Rudd wants Australia to be more like China.

The solution would be to have an ISP that only offered blocked content, then see how many people sign up...

By what means? If your ISP is doing the censoring, how can you get unfiltered content?

How do you find things that are blocked have a son between the ages of 10 to 15 and watch him when he is on the computer when he thinks you are not watching. Then you will see how to do it

A wonderful program called TOR. Just google "Tor Project". I've found it great for getting access to Aus and US news sites when in Vietnam or China.

Yet when it comes to election time everyone votes for their traditional party despite what crap they have done.......

MY party can do no wrong and when it does do wrong it was the opposition forcing them.....

Shouldn't it be an *option* to have your connection censored, rather than complete blanket censorship? I personally think it's all bs to control what we see and hear. Too bad it'll be another 3 years before we can vote Rudd out on his butt.

For what it's worth, there is a petition I found:

over 4,500 signatures so far.

Reminds me of China, "Great Firewall of China!". Don't worry, us geeks always come through.

If not, people will get fed up without their porn soon enough anyway and make some sort of complaint.

i don't think it matters if we can bypass it or not but the govt should not be allowed to bring out anything like this. It's almost as bad as London with their cameras watching everybody 24/7

The next government wont do it any differently. How do you argue for your right to access ILLEGAL content? Your right to PIRATE music/software etc?

The last government did much more under the guise of "anti-terrorism".

I dont support filtering so dont bother with that tripe, Im just pointing it out.

The next Government is irrelevant unless one has a crystal ball.

The last Government is not the topic, lets keep this on track.
