Apparantly Rove has done a deal with Ford to do a similar car giveaway that Oprah done years ago...

Should be exciting, a disadvantaged family/public relations activity. The goverment pitched in some $$ to offset Fords outlay, Roving enterprises pitched in some as well as the salvation army.

I never wish apon anone to be 'disadvantaged' but i want a new Fairlane too :(

Depending on quantities thats bound to put a dent in the value of these cars. If you give out brand new cars to people who are disadvantaged how many of them are actually going to keep them?

Well thats it exactly... For people that cant scrape enough $$ to service and maintain a Datto 120y im not sure of the condition a new car will be in after a year? Oh well.

I wasn't reffering to the condition these cars will be kept in. If you were in poverty and were given a $40k+ car it is unlikely you would keep it. I would guess most of them would sell them, buy a 5-10k car (if needed) and have some cash, and if a crap load of new cars hit the second hand car yards at once, what is this going to do the resale value of them?

Resale value of new cars isnt too crash hot anyway so i dont think it would even be a issue.

It's easy to live below the "poverty line" in a nation that expects each family to have 3 large TVs, 2 gaming consoles, Pay TV, etc, etc. I think we have no real idea of what poverty actually is here in Australia.

Asia and Africa come to mind readily. My brother in Law does awesome work with orphans in Uganda, the College where I work supports orphans in India. Boy do these regions know what poverty is!

Having said all that there are fellow Aussies really struggling to put food on the table and pay their rates, utility bills and rego. These are the ones having a rought trot! BTW ever actually been on a horse giving you a rough trot? Not pleasant at all for blokes I can tell you! LOL! Anyway such people are usually embarrassed to accept help and aren't the ones crying poor. If the Salvos are involved, the vehicles will go to people in real need. I have a lot of respect for anyone who happily picks up drug affected and homeless people and helps get them back on their feet.

I applaud Rove's effort and hope that he is being guided by people who really understand what's going on for these struggling families!

Ah i see what you mean... I think perhaps poverty is the wrong descriptor. I think its aimed at families that have had a 'rough trot'. But i guess if you had some huge medical expenses that was hampering house payments etc. cars will get offloaded.. But in the grand scheme of things a small influx of used vehicles might not affect australias mean resale value.

The BFII XR's with the Grey inserts in the Bumpers, and revised side-skirts. In a similar vein to the Rebel packs on the AUIII's. It is easier to call them BFIII than revised bumper models with grey inserts.

Thats what I was thinking- however the number of cars there made me think something else was going on. Rental places usually have a mix of all different types of vehicles in there carparks. Not 1 carpark with 40 or so XR's and another with 40 or so Fairlanes.

Yeah I would agree that they are Hertz cars as well. My father rents a lot of cars from them, and the majority he gets (mainly XR6s, Fairmonts, Aurions and Fairlanes) have less than 2000km on the clock when he picks them up, many even having as little as 20km. I don't know how it works, but perhaps all the new cars go to the airport and they move the older stuff out into the suburbs.

At brisbane airport the are most likely 300 plus brand new series 3 xr6's and fairmont ghias there all of which are waiting to be put into service by the rental companies. IIRC there was 70 something of them just for the rental company I work for
