Smile Painting interior parts...

Hey guys, I've searched the forums but can't seem to find an answer.

I decided to paint my front door speaker covers black to match a few other minor things I've changed to black, kind of looks nice the black/grey combo, but am a bit new to this sort of thing. I painted the covers but the paint is flaking/scratching off pretty easy. Whats the best way to change the colour of these? Buy new covers, or entirely new door trims? ;-)

Thanks.

the speakers covers are like a metal type cover right? did u etch and prime them before u painted? cus u really need to, then get aresol can from autobarn with the right colour match paint, preferable in 1pac, not the water based 5$ cheaper stuff. if u want u can clear coat with a 1 pac clear and make it 2pac or u can get the cheap stuff. but u dont really need to clear.

Do you mean the plastic grilles that are part of the door trim? If so, then you could use VHT vinyl/plastic spray, or a better way to go is to use plastic primer first, then paint as per normal (ie base primer coat, colour coat, and clear coat). If you use acrylic primers, stick to acrylic top coats - you can mix enamel and acrylic, but not on the same day.

I have done this recently. The grills are definately plastic.
They way that i did it was 2 coats of plastic prime, 3/4 coats of colour, then 2/3 coats of clear. Has worked a treat and is yet to chip. All products used were holts presure packs.

As JC suggested, you could use vinyl dye, but i have found that it chips/rubs off in high use areas, even with plastic prime

Pics included:

Cheers

Looks sweet, sounds like thats the way to go. I didn't use plastic primer, just colour and clear coated, doh. Back to the paint shop for me, thanks for the tips!

Should also say that you will need a wax/grease remover as well. You need to use this before priming the part. I use k&h wax/grease remover

Cheers
