Default Compliance

Do you guys when you have a car imported have to put it through a compliance test before it can get registered?? ie; inspection and test?

I know that here in NZ we do, if we import a car, it goes to a compliance centre for a thorough checkover before it gets registered. Do you guys in aus have to do this too?

Cheers,

Brendon

In Aus only certain car post 89 can be imported. Cars which werent sold new in the country and have significant value (performance, luxury, unique feature, acknowledged in motoring magazines). Of these cars a workshop has to apply for a licence to import them and has to demonstrate that these cars can pass numerous ADR tests. Its a PITA and it can take years to get model compliance. Normally however when you do get your car only minor stuff is changed, tyres and the like but some models need stuff like catalytic convertors and side intrusion bars.

For cars pre 89 "The old Fifteen Year Rule" its virtually open slather. All models are available and most workshops can comply your obscure car with only minor changes. The changes were brought about by car companies worried about a flood of imports like NZ and dodgy brothers doing half arsed compliance jobs on Skylines

This article is old but outlines what workshops do for compliancing
