The piston will always move in the bore from side to side as the top of the piston is about 0.080'' or 2mm smaller at the top in the ring lands, it will be fine it should be nice and free, as the AU's have a very shallow piston skirt it will move about 1mm or so up on the crown anyway.

If its clean and not all carboned up then yes if you look closely and with a torch you would most likely be able to see part of the top ring.

you need a proper bore guage to measure properly, a feeler guage is only rough, i wouldnt bother unless your gonna do something about it when you see Fords more then generous piston to bore clearances.

well for my build i went 0.020" on TOP and the Second compression ring. You wouldnt want much more then that unless your running some serious boost or nitrous.

thanks for you help mate, the guy that rebuilt it is a qualified mechanic and has put it together with 6.0+mm gap in the rings (that anit a typo the dec point is after the 6mm), makes me wonder, at a guess i recon he has used EB of EF rings

Sounds like he has done something stupid and put EA rings and or pistons into a 4.0L style block, its only 0.030" differance in bore size but would be why your saying you have so much gap and piston movement. Anychance you can get up some pics?

With 6mm ring eng gap clearance which is 0.240" is 0.220" more then you would want. With 5.5mm more then you want it would be a very low compression engine and would blow some serious clouds of smoke. Not to mention be gutless.

thay are defiantly AU pistons must be the rings that are incorrect, the reason for the pull down was because it was meant to have a crook head gasket, when the head came off the pistons where covered in oil and even the block and head faces where coated in oil, what part did you want pics of ?
