Woolgoolga High School 1983 – 1989 (HSC) Allthough I finished my apprenticeship as a Plant Mechanic (Diesel Fitter) at TAFE in '92 I ended my Apprenticeship 3 months early due to Harassment from two emplyees at my workplace.... It was a really bad time in my life having also had a very messy bust up with my long term girlfriend Back then I had no wish to remain a mechanic and moved from Coffs Harbour down to Sydney for a fresh start So I never gained my licence as a mechanic... (quite silly really considering all I had to do was apply for early completion) I've been applying for different jobs over the last 2 months or so and I'm probably just being a little impatient.... ( I know it takes a while for some of these jobs to fill) I've applied for a several jobs as a tyre fitter with BHP Mitsubishi Alliance near Mackay (still waiting to hear from them) And one from DT workforce from the same area several Serviceman positions too (changing oil/lube work) with some big mining companies What I'm looking for from this thread is just any other info people would care to share that may help my prospects Thanks for your input  : |

I would say ya biggest draw back is the fact you never got your diesel ticket and you left the trade 16 years ago.
The question is what sort of work have you been doing since you left the mechanical/ engineering line of work. A mate applied for a Job as a Fitter for Hamersley Iron, Took 2 months before he got a phone call telling him to come in for a interview.

would really just be happy with an entry level job with a major company though only 3 jobs over the last 15 or so years tyre fitting concreting box picking (Safeway produce) |

Ive worked in the mining industry for the last 4 years in W.A. Unfortunately 99% of mining jobs are filled by '' the people you know ''. I find this sad because everyday i see lazy people who are employed because they know someone and end up leaving after a few months or just turn up to get paid and don't do there job. This unfortunately waste positions and the people who are genuinely wanting a job miss out. Diesel mechanics are always heavily wanted - just pick up the paper and look in the mining section and you ll see what i mean ( especially in W.A. ). I reckon you have three options. 1) Go back and finish your mechanics qualification. 2) Apply for another apprenticeship with a mining company as a diesel mechanic. No doubt your time will be cut due to the time you have already done. Diesel mechanic apprentices at our site are getting paid more then the dump truck drivers ($60000+ P.A. ). 3) Look for mining jobs in W.A. - This is where all the mining is at the moment. Most jobs offer a 2 week on / 1 week off roster. You may have to fork out your own plane ticket to fly over to W.A. for your two week stint, but it will give you mining experience and once your in - your in, and you can go where ever you want. I work with a few people who fly from the eastern states to work here. Good luck in with what you choose to do.

To me it looks like you have alot of good tickets on yourself. My suggestion would be call up some employment agencies cos they seem to act alot quicker then the big companies. I sent out a resume the other week for a job and have had maybe 10 other jobs in the mines offered to me <but im picky>. This is in WA as well but im lead to believe qld isnt too much different.

My other half, Eamon, is looking to get into a course at the TAFE here, called the Diploma of Geoscience. Included in the course is a Certifcate III in Mining Exploration. It is an 18 month full time course. He is hoping to get a job in the mines in mid 2010 when the course is finished, in one of the SA mines with the Olypmic Dam expansion... I guess we will see how that goes...

i have just been taken on as a full time employee with Pilbara Iron/RioTinto/HI (whichever you want to call them these days) but started in February working this position through Skilled. So there is always the option of gaining employment through these sorts of companies first then once you're inside, you can have a look and apply for a lot of internally advertised jobs.

ive been trying to get a job in wa for the last 11 months with no luck yet i was told i would'nt have a problem gettin in ive got my m/c,loader,skidsteer,forklift licence's also 2 years excavator experance to. i think unless your living there or know someone its goin to hard

Have you considered the oil fields? Much better pay than the mines and even time rosters, ie 3 weeks on 3 weeks off (or 2 and 2, 4 and 4, depending on where you are). I worked the mines for a few years before heading offshore and will never go back!

I'm considering anything....
but i would have thought it would be harder to get into oil than it would be for mining ? there seems to be lots of banter about what to do... I know about 8 or so people, that KNOW people that work in the mining industry but do you think i can get them to chase up their friends and get any solid leads  : One guy I used to work with when i was apprentice (he was already a trady) has since left that workplace and started his own business He knows a guy who went to work for BHP up near Mackay just as a plain old kicking coal miner... no experience... nothing... this guy supposedly gets a 3 bdrm house from BHP for him and his missus to live in for $35 a week... plus his generous wage from working 12hr shifts I'd do that if i could just find out who to ask.... :togo: Back to trade jobs though.... its not hard to find jobs to apply for but 99% of jobs advertised are for graduate stuff.... i.e. engineers, geologists etc etc... jump on SEEK and try and find an entry level job !!!! As some have said... it seems as though its mostly word of mouth stuff... you need a friend already working at a place to put in a good word for you, to help you get a foot in the door. and once your in and you've done 6 -12 months your options are endless I have a mate that lives close by, we started talking about getting a mining job mid last year we got some back pay and did a bunch of courses (as you can see above) and started applying for jobs about 4 weeks ago he started a labouring job in Port Hedland WA he was supposed to be doing sand blasting and spray painting for BHP when i rang him the other week he was actually working for a company called Goodline which does a lot of sub-contracting for these big mining companies funny thing was that he was working on the Fortescue Metals Group site a company which his father works for, as a QA manager for the Port project. Is that just a coincidence?  I spend 50% of my free time on the net looking for jobs... all the big name mining companies have there own career websites and i frequent them daily and apply for anything i think I'm even half qualified to do  : you'd think with the amount of growth in employment in the construction and mining industries it would certainly be a lot easier than this to find an entry level job |

He has got a house in Mackay. He is a Qualified Diesel Mechanic and moved up there.

It's like you say mate, allot of the time it is word of mouth, having someone say to you apply for this job and having someone who works for the same company vouch for you and bang you have a job.
The people I know in mining got there Job's buy having somebody on the inside vouch for em or tell them when a position was opening up, I know 2 people in Oil and Gas but they just got lucky. Get in touch with Contractors like Skilled, Mine people Ect if you haven't already as allot of mining company's use them and then you can transfer onto a site from there if a Full time job is avalable.

i have heard of apprentices on mines, but its rarer than a chick who gives blowjobs on her birthday....
I see 3 Options, in order of preference... 1 Get your ticket, be a fitter..... You will get 90k plus good super and a decent roster, 2 Get a job as a Drillers offsider- Crap Job, Crap pay Crap conditions (55-60k) but if you stick to it for 6 months or more you will get a lot of respect for hard work and will be easy to get onto trucks or boggers, anything with good pay and conditions. 3 Get a job as a cleaner- Okay pay (~65k) average roster and will be very hard to get into production/development/exploration side of things, but a cruisy job to make a few extra dollars. The bottom line is, do ANYTHING you can to get onsite experience its not the experience doing a particular job they scrutinise the most, its whether you can handle being away from home so much as this is why most people leave the industry and they dont want to invest in training you, thenyou decide you dont like being away from home.
