Wed 12th it goes in. I'll pick the car up the next day.

I'll have the cam in but won't be reprograming the unichip just yet. I'm kinda short on funds for this....have to help cover an excess for a g/f inflicted minor car accident incident.

Then come the 30th if all goes to plan I'll be up at the creek.

I'm really hanging out for this. A mate today just bought an underdrive kit for his supercharged v6 Calais while we were at Summernats and i'm interested to see how we'll pair up against each other once he has it done.

yerp. I drop the car off tomorrow.

I'm also gonna give the track day a miss. I figure with the weather we're having it's gonna be bloody hot so I'll save the testing for a weekly WSID day. Should be a better run at night than if I do it during the day.

Should give you a good boost and I think he'll do a good job.If they are keeping it overnight I can only assume that they will have it on the dyno to adjust the best power curve..

OK.

I went in today to get it taken care of. I then had a bit of a chat and when I got the price for the work I had a mild coronary.

The price for the reprogamming of the chip I was ok with but the price of the cam install was quite high based on what I'd heard of other places charging.

Stav I remember what you told me you paid to get yours done by Crescent so I decided I'd give them a call. They were about a third of the price.

Guess who's getting the job now.

I'll get the chip stuff done by Autotech but the cam install is gonna be done by Crescent. I really can't see why one place would be that much different when to the best of my really limited knowledge everything is basicly under the rocker cover. Its not like its an 8 or anything.

Don't get me wrong, I reckon the guys @ Autotech do a great job but I can't justify why there would be that much of a price difference.

Lox, just be careful. I've spent a bit of time messing with chips as you know and what your about to do could end up being a bit of a drama. The Unichip in your car is tuned to optimise it as it is now. The Dev 5 cam is a BIG change. It will probably throw the unichips timing and A/F ratios out the window till you get it retuned. At best it will probably run a bit dodgy, at worst you could have serious leaning out issues with fuel. Get the unichip retuned asap.

Yep ....I think that Joe will have an idea with his dyno and lamda sensor to warn you of any dramas. In any case I agree with Casper drive it easy so you dont damage anything from leaning out too much

For sure. I'm just gonna have it temporarily disconnected when the cam goes in. I've asked Crescent Motorsport to do this. I sussed out the problems this may cause earlier so have no intention of leaving the chip to cope with the changed internals of the engine.

I'll just go back to Autotech later once I have the dosh and they can reconnect and retune the Unichip.

you cant just unplug a piggyback chip you need to bridge the wire's,this needs to be done by someone who knows the unichip installation..there might be a end cap you can buy unplug the chip stick the end caps over..
you say in post 10 if your installer had the software he would tune it for you, when tuning unichips you need more than software you need a special dongle tool that plugs into the unichip to read and make changes to the map..
From what i have seen Dev 5 is a big Cam, have you found out if this will run without a your unichip..
Goodluck hope it all goes well..

You are right Mark, you need a blanking plug IIRC as unplugging the chip will break the connection and the car will not run.
Also, tuning is a specialist deal that requires the knowledge of the software, not just a basic "suck it and see knowledge"

As for the Dev 5, it will run fine on the stock ECU, it has been done by a few guys now. TIKFD6 has one in his ED XR6 that is running on the factory ECU.

that was the whole design point of the Dev cams ;)
Dev 5 can do wonders and u keep the stock ECU..

the simple thing to do would be to install it, leave the unichip in the car and just take it easy before it gets tuned.

That's not advisable as the Unichip would have been tuned to pull some fuel out, giving decent AF ratios.
The DEV5 cam will also achieve a similar thing by way of greater air flow.
The two combined, without re-tuning the Unichip, will create dangerously lean AF ratios.

I think I'll err on the side of caution and get it taken out/disconnected as I don't think I'll be driving too sedately for the first week or so after getting the cam done.

Bit of an update :

Appears there was quite a bit of a mixup with the figures I was quoted for the job. Spiro has been in contact but due to my phone being out of action and at the Vodafone repair shop being fixed I haven't been able to check any messages.

The follow up on the job by him is appreciated and also goes to show why they are a top class joint.

I'll be back in contact with Spiro @ Autotech on Monday.

I didnt think Spiro would shoot himself in the foot deliberately. You would think after his impressive work on your car with the unichip that the quote would have been more resonable. Its good to see that he is commited to you as a customer. Even though my cam was done elsewhere I have to give Spiro 10/10 for trying. Perhaps he may want to get staff that don't scare the customer away. Without going into much detail they scared me too....Perhaps with this in mind It may be time for a second chance and chip in the near future.

Just a thought. Wouldn't it be better to hold of on the install until you've got the $$ to do the install and have it all tuned at the same time. I'm guessing an saying its about $200 to have it all tuned properly. That way the car should be flyin when you get it back with no issues

Joe @ Crescent is doing the install.

I called Spiro back re: doing the job and the quote he gave me was way cheaper than the first quote. I'd recommend dealing with Spiro direct.

It was decided that we'd stay with Crescent as we had already booked the car in and didn't want to cancel the job at short notice.

I will however be back to Autotech for the retune of the Unichip hopefully soon after.

Unhappy

When it rains, it pours...

Dropped the car in today, had a chat with Joe - nice guy - discussed his plans for series 1 AU brake upgrades, better intake mod and this thing with the throttle that supposedly gives more torque somehow etc and then I left it in his hands.

Watched Elektra - a bit ordinary - bummed around at Liverpool for a bit then went back to read FHM at the workshop.

Got back, got called over and then received some more news. Looks like that rattling noise I'd hear in the car needed fixing. It was something to do - I lost interest to be honest due to wanting the car back and running - with the timing chain and this other inherent falcon engine problem that occurs due to excessive high revving apparently. He had the same prob with Pierre's car from Fordmods. Someone more technical may now what I'm talking about.

So the car's staying in and he's gonna fix this and do the cam work. He wasn't expecting to have to do all of this so it will be staying a bit longer.

Then to make matters worse I get the train home and take the car keys with me. I was meant to be going to a mates to watch the wrestling (Royal Rumble - i rarely see the wrestling but this event is one of the better ones) so that's off too now.

Anyway, thats my day. I know it will be 100x better when I get the car back.
