Good to see someone NOT bagging them for once.
Too many 'non-conformist' kids are bagging the band out as being rip offs of sab/zep. Sure, they sound like them in ways.. But they haven't blatently ripped off stuff like some other bands *cough*jet*cough*, lol. And i'd rather hear these guys belting out than some simple greenday/simple plan **** in the 'rock' category these days. Good on em. I've been a fan since when their EP came out, and the album just continued with some sweet songs. Them, Karnivool and COG are the best things going around these days in the Aussie see IMO. |

i CANNOT believe the success that Wolfmother is having?! if i was John Bonham and Jimmy Page (Led Zep) i'd be considering re-releasing songs/albums/box sets to cash in on all these kids buying this crap. Led Zep are one of my all time favourite bands, and even I have made the mistake of calling a wolfmother song Led Zep, and vice versa. and it annoys me. i had one kid at McDonalds where i work, tell me that "Led Zeppelin are just a rip off of Wolfmother" i have little respect for these 70's rock rip-off bands. watch Rage at like 1am, every single video clip is of some band doing this same thing. doing this loose washed up 70's rocker stuff. and it frustrates the hell out of me. i'll try as hard as i can to do something different to break into the market, but at the end of the day, all i need to do is take some AC/DC, Led Zep, Deep Purple, a few other bands, throw it all together and mix up some riffs, and voila, ill be in the charts. its BS. i cold go on longer, but i have work to do : in reference to the Karnivool and COG commnets. Karnivool are pretty cool. COG on the other hand, when i saw em a couple of weeks ago, i couldnt tell when they stopped playing Tool on the PA and COG had started. granted that, they arnt bad. just not as Original as i would like. Sunk Loto, are an awesome aussie (hardcore) band. and have gotten some decent success overseas. much better than all the bands above, in terms of musicanship and live show IMO. BUT at the end of the day, each to their own. :the_finge

The thing is, people can't just go out and see Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath live anymore, and if they could do that, they'd be paying an absolute fortune these days to see a bunch of washed up old rockers who should just give it up (Rolling Stones anyone? As a fan of them, i've being embarrased by some of their later shows). It's a chance for people who love that era of music to keep living it in a live and 'new' way. A lot of kids didn't get to grow up with Zep, Sabbath, Deep Purple etc playing on the radio, and now's their chance to experience some of that. I'd much rather go and see Wolfmother, in an energetic live set, than listen to House of the Holy for the 1000th time in my bedroom again. Sunk Lotto used to be good.. But IMO Karnivool are MUCH better musicians making better/more original music. And COG have the biggest sound i've EVER heard from a 3 piece act live. I don't think they're that similar to TOOL, sure, you can hear a lot of the influence (tool are one of my favourite bands..), but the vocals are distinct.. and hey. I'd much rather pay $15 bucks and go see COG a few times, than $100 or whatever to be stuck at a concert surounded by typical 'Tool - non conformist, i'm different from everyone but doing the same thing as Maynard and everyone else at this damn show' type people. Meh. And, and PS. My mate is old friends with Chris (bass/keys) from Wolfmother, and they never set out to be the next big thing, or some rip off 70's band. They were just playing the music THEY loved and happened to get famous from it. People should just enjoy the music they love to play and be thankful someone has good taste in music these days (much rather kids listening to wolfmother than 'fiddy' cent etc). |

Well-said popinfresh. Pixies are one of my favourite bands and I only got in the last couple of years (they were before my time or when I was too young :P) and same goes for White Stripes, they rock!! I personally quite like Wolfmother, although I've only heard their current album and nothing else of their's. I haven't seen them live either, so my judgement only goes as far as that. I'm also a big fan of The Living End (self-titled album; it's one of my favourites) but find they're new stuff just doesn't cut it. Same goes for The Offspring; after Smash it was fairly downhill. But I guess that happens to a lot of artists that make it big these days and get carried away with the fame and money. On another note it's good to see enthusiasm for Australian music/artists. If you step away from the rock scene, there are brilliant artists doing some awesome stuff in other genres. Most-notably, if you like drum n bass, Pendulum is wicked!! I also saw True Live, live, for a bit at Fed Square and that was really something - double bass, violin, drums and a bit of hip-hop (not the trashy kind). Obviously in the end it comes down to your personal music taste. I like to think I have a very broad taste and appreciation of music.. Some people won't appreciate anything outside of crumby commerical "RnB" / pop, and some are stuck in the 60s and 70s. I just feel sorry for those missing out on so much!

PS. True Live are ferkin sweet! Specially live.. I'd never seen something like that before. So cool to see classical intruments being mixed with modern styles and hip hop in a real setting (not backing/synths like most of it). |

Having grown up with my old man playing the likes of Hendrix and Zeppelin when he wanted to listen to what he thought was great music, and having grown up playing guitar all my life I find it easy to appreciate good music when I hear it. The problem these days is the lack of effort, feeling, emotion and so forth that seems to be put into music. When you listen to tracks like Stairways, Dazed & Confused and event something like Heart breaker, you can feel the effort and feeling that each member of Zep put into their music... What frustrates me these days is that it doesn't seem to happen quite as often... Take for instance, Pete Murray. Great song writer, his songs are good and I enjoy listening to the two albums he has produced, but not one of his songs has captured me in any way for raw emotion that he has put into his music, and the lack of experiemental guitar work or solos is kinda upsetting also... Having played guitar for more of my life than not, I look to this type of music to enjoy some good talent for listening, but I don't often get to listen to much of it because there isn't usually much played. I can't say I enjoy the likes of Metallica and those heavier bands these days because alot of their guitaring talent is aided by pedals and whatever sound effects they use. I must say, the biggest disappointment I have faced recently is the release of John Mayer's new album which almost completely rids the thing I loved most about him: his guitaring talent. Perhaps some of you aren't in to his genre of music, but listen to a live version of 'Covered in Rain' to experience just how good of a guitarist he is and listen to some of his music to see how much emotion and feeling he puts into his music. But that's just what captures me, the amount of feeling put into music, rather than just writing plain basic songs for the commercial market...

Kirk hammit is only useing the same things that paige and hendrix used,distortion/gain, reverb/delay and a wa wa pedal so I wouldn't exactly call it aided. You still have to actually play the guitar you still have to put you're feeling into the instrument . True, distortion can let you get away with some things but it makes other things worse. I dont know how long half of you're life is but I have been playing the guitar for 27 years . I play metallica songs in my band and all I use is a valve pre amp for distortion and a graphic eq to take the edges off. None of these things I would call effects I just call them my guitar amp. I understand that you dont like to listen to heavy bands and that is fine but I would not dismiss them as guitar players just because they use a whole pile of distortion. I think you might be surprised at how hard some of that stuff is to play. Why dont you learn a kirk hammit solo and see how easy it is, it's not all smoke and mirrors.

Better than Jet (although that isn't hard), not as good as The Living End though.

I don't want to hijack the thread....so I will say that a few of Wolfmother's songs aren't particularly exciting - Joker and the Thief is pretty boring, but I do like Woman and their first single.

Their sound is not totally their own. Don't get me wrong, they are excellent. But their style is pure 70's. Take the time and listen to Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, Deep Purple and some Uriah Heep. You'll see where they got inspired. I have the Wolfmother cd, and have for quite a while, as I like their "Old School" sound. :

As for Wolfmother, I despised them initially but their album is pretty good. Sure I rate Led Zepp, Deep Purple and Sabbath as 3 of my fave bands but whats wrong with playing a style you're influenced by? Plenty of bands now have been influenced by earlier bands who pioneered their genre and make a living out of it for people to listen to. I think that's part the reason what made the early bands so good, they actually defined the style of music as it hadnt been done yet. There wouldnt be many bands of today that could claim to have a style they have defined as much as the older ones, as so many styles have been crossed and altered Sure beats listening to the mainstream teeny bop and r & b crap that gets played these days |

Wolfmother are great. Yes, they do have influences from LZ & DP but they have added their own fresh sound to it. They're very good live too, I say them at the BDO last year and they blew me away.
