Default What's my car worth? Not another one of these threads!!

Hi All,

Just a basic question, what's my car worth as a private sale?

Before I get into the details, I am after cold, hard, honest answers, and I WILL NOT be offended by the truth!!!

It's an AU Series 3 (2002) Futura Station Wagon. 165000 kms, full service history, well looked after and in very good condition throughout. Organza (champagne) exterior with black/charcoal interior. Has roof racks, towbar and cargo barrier plus all standard Futura features (alloy wheels, Cruise control, ABS, colour coded bump strips around the car etc etc)

We're not really looking at this stage at selling, just seeing whether it's feasible to upgrade, or hold on to it for another few years.

Thanks,

Justin.

Have a look in the trading post, and also the cars guide in the Herald Sun, that is if you are in Melbourne! You could also try Redbook. In fact this is what it says.

Red Book Code FORD02HT
2002 FORD FALCON

AU III Futura Wagon 4dr Auto 4sp 4.0i
Prices based on km 60,000 - 100,000
Trade in price guide* $8,400 - $9,800
National average price - private sale* $10,800 - $13,300
Price when new (RRP) $38,600

That should give you a bit of a guide. Compare that price with the local papers and ebay and the trading post and things that go and that will give you the full picture!

To be honest you are asking the wrong crowd as you are going to get no-where.

I think we are exactly the right crowd, no nonsense and honest advice. Sadly, that irritates many newcomers, who visit to ask us what their car is worth, they usually leave quite upset. People so often think their car is worth so much more than it actually is.

I guess that's what you meant by your comment?

If you are going to trade it in expect an offer of around $5500 to $7000. The high km's are going to kill you and all the extra's are worth zero.
Private sale.. expect less than $10K.

Sickening to think a four year old car could be worth so little
But I agree, privately aim for the $10k mark. Being an AUIII will help it in a big way, but the k's are way above average for its age.

Agreed the high K's are the enemy here but in reality there are so many good deals going on near new and used 2, 3 & 4 year old cars that it has affected the whole used & trade in market
Good time to be buying though so consider that what you lose on the sale of yours you will make up on the next purchase

I agree with NAXR6 $8,000 is what its really worth. be prepared for trade in valuations less than this though.

Mods are worth zero unless its a private sale.

its not worth trading up unitill its costing you big money to keep it on the road which should be a while although the k's are high.

Hey I've been looking at an AU3 Ghia at a Ford dealer on and off for a while now, done 90,000 kays, got the lot, Full leather, V8, electric sunroof, tow pack, a dark blue colour, absolutely lovely!

Would I like it, YES.

The asking price, $23,000. What a joke! Someone with 15K cash (i can't the misses would lynch me!) should go and make an offer.

I know how you feel though, depreciation is a shocker, always has been, always will be! LOL!

Yeah depreciation is bad its digusting to think that a 50k Fairmont Ghia only 5 years old is worth maybe 16k with low kays.

It could be worse though, you could be in a Magna/Verada, a 2002 Verada is lucky to pull 14k these days.

Could be worse, could be a BA Fairmont. One for sale on the forums... 2003 model, 50,000kms, $18K

The BA is now the same price as an AU3 in a lot of cases.. without the build quality.

your car is work only what someone is prepared to pay, its easy for someone to say its worth $12,000, but when you go and advertise you get no genuine buyers, you know you have to reduce your price. second hand cars are not worth that much.

I bought my EFII Fairmont Ghia about 2.5 years ago for $14,000, now i could only get about $8300 for it, a bit annoying, but in the end i got two and a half great years of mostly reliable driving from the car, so i cant complain.
I think the people that get really anoyed about crappy resale vale is the people who havent payed the car off quicker then the depreciation and will still owe money if they sell the car.

Now we all know on the forums the EFII Ghia is the pick of the e series but I doubt you will even get $6k for it. A neighbor of mines went for $5k privately and it wasn't bad at all. he wasn't happy with the trade so had it for sales for months only to get $5k!

Why is the EFII better than the EL Ghia? I've not been into E series cars, so I don't know, but I'd like to have it explained! Broaden the knowledge base and all! LOL!

Indulge me please if you don't mind!

EL beats EFII
And they aren't worth squat, some of you might remember my EL cop car, very nice, well maintained, some body work required, went for $3000 + a run down magna (which sold for $1700) to another forum member. After being advertised for 3 months at $6,000 with no takers.
