Default Plumber's van explosion

Plumber's van exploded earlier today in the news. Must have been a pretty big gas tank to do this much damage :. Nobody hurt, but kinda feel sorry for that BA/BF with its side near torn off in the neighbour's driveway :

...'His apprentice told of his miraculous escape after he was hit by the van blast, which occurred after his workmate pressed a keyless device to open the vehicle.

Luke Clark, 17, was standing in the driveway of Mr Ponton's home when the new VW Transporter van exploded.

‘‘He’s unlocked it and there was this big explosion and I went flying into the fence,’’ Luke said'.... :

Looks like it may of been a acetylene bottle issue.

That'll buff out.

Nah seriously that was pretty bad. Apparently the gas went off when the apprentive unlocked it with the central locking remote.

We are only allowed to transport oxy/acetylene gear in soft tonneau utes at my work, no vans or canopy utes. No gas build up, eliminates the problem.

GT-Cobra here in Vic you can transport acetylene in a enclosed vehicle but it must be fitted with a approved cabinet with a hole cut out of the floor to be vented outside ect.......

He might of had one mate but sometimes we get lazy and throw the bottle in with the rest of the tools.A very silly and dangerous thing to do but sometimes you just don't think it will happen to you.

Those oxy bottles can be dangerous things. One of my mates dad was a plumber earlier in his life and used to take old spent bottles out in the boat fishing, when the fishing got boring they would float it on the water and knock the top off with a sledgehammer and watch it dart across the water. Probably not a good idea in case it barrels back towards the boat!

Sounds like another urban legend, why would spend (say empty) gas bottles have any pressure to dart across the water??? Been watching too many episodes of McGeiver I think....

But lucky escape for the people in this case, could have been much worse...

I know of blokes doing similar. They refil the empties with compressed air. Bit harder these days as the bottles are barcoded and cost about $1000.

I was staying at my brothers place in Wilson, a suburb of Perth in the early 80's, just after 6am we heard this huge bang, we went outside but could'nt see anything, just the neighbours doing the same as us....

....around lunchtime while driving around we heard on the radio that a plumber had gone out to his panelvan to go to work, climbed in, turned the key and BANG!!...he died 3 hours later....

....this was 4 streets away from my brothers house and most of the houses around the Plumbers place had there windows blown in, but luckily no one else was hurt....
