It can be done without removing the head. You will need an overhead valve spring compressor to get the valvesprings out and a special slide hammer tool to get the old valve stem seals off the head, but other then that its pretty easy and about a days work. Just make sure you don't let the valve fall into the cylinder when you take the valvesprings out.
