I have an SA Active and only recently updated SYNC from 3.3 to 3.4 via USB method. Had no issues and it was completed in around 20-30 minutes.
The matter regarding the maps not appearing soon after updating is pretty much the norm. It seems to take a while for everything to reset itself and my maps returned to normal after 20 minutes.
It's not like you're not warned about it. A screen message appears just before the update starts alerting you that some features may not be immediately available after the update.
As for updating SYNC OTA, it seems some users have had success doing it this way, but it takes a long long time. The USB method is speedier.
