Look for small diameter vacuum hoses (e.g. 5-8mm small black rubber hoses) that might be disconnected.
Easy for any mechanic to be distracted when finishing off a job.

Also, try an old mechanics trick.
Use a cardboard tube or piece of poly pipe stuck in your ear with the other end close to the engine, and track the noise that way. This block out all the background noise that our noggins hear when we simply lean over something.
This won't necessarily tell you 'what', but will help to pinpoint 'where'. Location of noises can be very deceiving.
