A small Japanese or Kia/Hyundai manual. That is the sensible choice. A Commodore or Falcon was a good choice ten years ago but most are too old now. The actual choice has to be made by the person who will be driving it. No point in a parent pushing them into something they hate. Also they should pay for it with their own money. That is a very good lesson in managing their finances.
