Coffee without sugar is an acquired taste. A bit like drinking full strength beer for the first time. Once the taste is acquired, it starts to taste better!
Your mate would love coffee in some asian countries. They use a tonne of condensed milk....tastes yummy....but can't tell whether I'm getting the kick from the sugar high or the caffeine.
