A mate is looking at a 1957 VW Beetle for $26.000 I would not spend such $ regardless.

That is not an unreasonable price for one depending on the condition. A really good one can be around 45-50K! prices have gone up a lot. If you want to gulp then look at something like a 1967 Porsche 911S. A mint one is around 300K!
