The bit where you say "it might be a matter of the kid eating something and it giving him autism" The changes in brain development which lead to autism happen "in utero", in the second trimester. There is a strong genetic link with autism, my family was part of a research project in the '90s to identify the genes involved.
Descriptions of autistic behaviours have been found in historical documents dated long before vaccines. In biblical times it was thought to be evidence of demon possession and some church leaders thought it best if such people were quietly strangled.
