bhempstead - Hey mate, I agree. I have owned a Focus with a Zetec engine and it was all good, though a little asthmatic in standard trim. But the potential is there for sure!
I am only supporting the cast iron anchor of a Pinto engine because I have four of them, they power my rally car and RS2000.
They are heavy, primitive, and a pain in the butt (you can't even change the camshaft without removing the head or engine). They don't want to stay running when cold, are hard to drive at low speeds (well when modified a fair bit), and aren't the most beautiful engine around.
But they are as part of an Escort as it's rally heritage, and I love them.
So yes, I agree with your statement completely, but they power my Escorts, and it's part of the classic car that I love.
