Default Re: Adam's Escort Mk2 '77 Thread

I had previously posted here regarding play in the steering.
The first step was to replace the steering rack mount rubber as it was looking worse for wear. I could see the whole rack move back and forth a few millimetres when turning the wheel.

I was tossing up between super pro and nolathane. I ended up going with nolathane ($30) since it was more readily available at the local shop. I’ve heard that nolathane uses a harder material however for steering rack mount bushes I don’t think this is such a bad thing, should provide better feedback.
TIP: When changing the steering rack mount bushes, go out and buy yourself some longer bolts. The stock ones are too short and you’ll just end up getting frustrated trying to get it back together. I used UNC 5/16” x 1 ½” long, they are imperial so make sure u use 1/2“ spanner or you could round the head. I also put on a second nut to help lock the bolt.

Steering is still not as crisp as I would like so I think the next step will be to change the tie rod ends (with wheel alignment to follow).

This weekend I’ll also bypass the heater as the heater core is leaking. A common problem I think since I had the same on my previous Esky. On that car I changed the whole heater unit with one from a wrecker but this time I think I’ll get the core repaired, there’s no guarantee that second hand replacement units won’t leak too.

Caliper rebuild kit is on the way (from the UK). Also looking for opinions on brake pads. I’ve only used EBC Greens before on Escorts and they are fairly good, especially when warm, but do tend to squeal a bit during first few hundred km’s of bed-in and are quite dusty. I can get the Greens for $85 a pair, anything else to consider in that range?

Busy times ahead...

p.s. what's the best way to post photos. The forum has very limited storage.
